Power Steering?
Power Steering?
Yo guys hows it goin...well here's the dirty. I just got this 1986 Rx7 TOTALLY BASE AND STOCK from my cuzin for 400 dollars. The Odo reads 145k but he said the motor was rebuilt (its a long story why the car is sooo cheap lol). All my life I've owned MK3 supra's and this was a good deal so I thought I would take it. Well after i got it I see that it needs quite a bit of interior work. I need a new dash new carpets and custom sub box of course
. I also need to paint the car but right now my main concern is power steering cuz its a b*atch tryin to turn w/o it. So I was wondering is it possible to convert to power steering? What will I need and how much labor is involved and if possible the price. This would be much appreciated. Oh if its not too much...the car doesn't have AC or it doesn't work I should say... What do you guys think the problem is?
Thanx

If it's really hard to turn, there's probably something wrong with the rack. I personally don't like cars with power steering at all, but an FC with a manual rack is pretty easy to drive by my standards anyway. My advice is to see if there's something wrong with the car (alignment, ect.) and if it all checks out, get used to it. The FSM reccomends cheacking the ball joint.
As far as the A/C goes, it probably does need to be recharged. Depending on how long it's been though, the system might be in pretty bad shape. When I checked mine, I cracked open one of the lines to discover that the system was bone dry, everything was dried out, and the compresser looked like it was getting corroded. I pulled out the whole system and threw it away.
Good luck.

By the way, the best way to check the steering system is to jack up the front of the car and get a spring scale. It should take about 1-2 pounds of force to turn the wheel with the tires off the ground.
