My power steering shut off once when i was boosting on the highway. I stopped and popped the hood. Belt snapped. ^_^ I happend to stop at the mazda dealership and they quoted me $25+ for a new belt. So I gave in and drove home power-steering-less only to lose my A/C belt later. Bad luck i guess. ^_^

How's the fluid level? I could see low fluid sloshing around causing issues...

The steering is speed sensitive, based off input to the speedo. As long as the wheels are spinning, it shouldn't get confused. The assist will drop off over 30mph or so - if you're drifting at low speed and have the rear tires spinning quickly, assist will drop, but it won't feel anything like a full loss of PS.
