Power options?
I need... lots of... more power. My alternator is the lowest of all stock: 70 amps, really just running at fifty. I've been told I can switch in a 3rd gen alternator, get a *second* alternator (!), put on lots of solar panels, try to get one from a Ford Contour (similar sizing) or get my stock alternator rewound to a higher rating.
Finding a guy to rewind my alternator really is impossible. "We don't rebuild imported alternators here, son." Solar panels are only so good, a second alternator is a pain in the ***, and FD alternators are hard to come by. What do you all suggest?
Got an '88 SE S4 here

Swap to Third gen alternator is easiest, and that sends you to 100 amps.
Many aftermarket companies sell single wire alternators, that put out 200 amps or more. with some slight modification, these would provide plenty of power.
how much current do you need, and why????

For your dollar, the FD alternator is probably the best answer. If you're not short of coin, check out the aftermarket high-output alternators the stereo guys use. Here's one example from a quick Google search, and here's a slightly more extreme one!

a few examples... is 130 amps at idle enough for you?
Expect to pay $350 to $400 for a big sucker like these.
$70 for a 100 amp FD alt. at any parts store.

I think that you're getting into urban myth territory here. I've seen at least one FD owner's page where they talked about how they wanted to upgrade to the 'better' FC alternator. Do a little more research b4 you spend the $.

I think 100 amps would serve me well, and that the FC alternator can make a nice paperweight. Or I'll hold onto it in case there's ever some kind of need for it.
