power to manual rack question
Before I get told to do a search, I did, and did not find the answer and I need to know this for tomorrow...
I pulled the fittings off the rack and all three will be getting capped with 2 M12 bolts with a pitch thread of 1.25 (Pressure/Return) and 1 M16 bolt with a pitch thread of 1.5 (Cooler). Before I do that though I'll try to get most of the fluid out. My question is: has anyone put any kind of synthetic gear oil like Royal Purple inside to keep things really lubricated? If so, how much? I don't want to be blowing out the bolts like bullets under pressure. If not, what has been your experiences? I don't need anyone trying to talk me out of it saying just get a manual rack or gut it out, etc. This is what I am doing. I just need to know about the gear oil or something similar. I won't be steering the car much anyway. It's just a weekend drag car. Thanks in advance.

search for the thread about correctly converting your power rack to manual. it talks about how to take the rack apart and remove the stuff inside so you don't have to worry about the pressure build up that you will probably get from blocking the rack lines.

Don’t worry too much about it. The rack and pinion are separate form the power steering fluid and are greased independently.
By adding oil, you will only be lubricating the hydraulic ram. I didn’t do it to mine and I don’t think it is necessary.
Get as much fluid out of the rack as possible, that includes turning it lock-to-lock and up-side down to drip. Even then, there should be enough fluid to keep things lubricated. If you want, go ahead and add a small amount (~a table spoon) of low viscosity oil.
