power assist steering

ok, on my 87 na, I have a brand new steering rack in the car, and I don't think that the power steering is working at the right times, sometimes it doesn't work at all(most of the time) It works most often in reverse and when going really slowly in first or second(like under 5 mph). it's becoming a pain in the *** because I can never tell when it'll start workin on me. I don't want to be crankin the wheel to get into a parking lot, have the steering start to work, oversteer and run up a curb! It also never works at idle

when should it work, how can I make it right, and/or is there a way that I can trick it into thinking it should work all the time( I kinda like power steering) or should I just remove the power steering altogether. I'd love it if there was a way to make it function continuously!

anyway, any help is appreciated!

for some reason, mine goes out when i try to make an extremely sharp turn. usually it happens when i'm doing about 10mph give or take and i cut the wheel as fast as i can. there will be no PS for a second, then it kicks in. fortunately, i've never been close enough to something to truely need it, but there have been close calls. at least now i know.

Sounds like low power steering fluid or bubbles in the system on both casio's and airbrush1s.

On Casio's it could also be the computer not reading engine speed or even driving style,(if you were dumping the clutch for example) as the 91 models (except T2 and 'verts) used the inferior, but cheaper engine speed sensing steering rather than vehicle speed sensing steering found on the S4 cars and S5 T2 and 'verts.

Engine Speed sensing

Mark,

I'm pretty sure the 91's (and probably the 90's from factory literature) are Engine Sensing Power Steering. I just changed out the PS Pump (the electricals were totally more simple) on my 91 Vert and it is totaly different than my 88 Verts which I KNOW is Speed sensing.

Yep, just double checked, you are correct and not just for the 91's... all the series 5 NA cars had engine speed sensing steering instead of vehicle speed sensing.

No wonder so many S5 owners want to rip out their power steering.

so being in neutral could cause this? i checked my power steering fluid and my fluid level was good. my car has a few electrical bugs, why not throw a few more in, huh? =/
