87' Specs

I just bought my car as of this very night. I know that it is non turbo, but am wondering if it is the 2+2 base model or just the base model... also what does the 2+2 mean that will answer my question!

2+2 means it is a 2 seater that they crammed tiny *** seats into the back that most adults wont fit in ;-)
I think for 89+ only the GXL (usually had leather and plenty of options) had the 2+2 option, but for 86-88 I think all but the convertible could have it, but I'm not sure if the turbo II could have a 2+2 as an option....hmmmm
Does yours have any markings?
A VIN # might help out
Also what other options do you have on it, A/C? Power windows? Sunroof? Cloth seats?

They only have em in japan. We only get ones for FDs.

Because of the availability of maps, the Haltech would be the best. PFC's, are nice, but you have to know how to tune them.
With a Haltech, it has already been tuned by thousands of people. All you need to do is upload their map.

forogt to mention if you have the slightest tuning abilities you can tune the power FC your self thats what the commander is for and there are just as many power FC tuners if not more than haltech, just because it is in a FC doesn't mean it is untuneable remeber there are about 6000 FD's running around with power Fc's, and one neat thing about it is that there wiring harnesses are still in tact and not all chooped up compared to the haltech install, just my .02 cents

I think that most of the appeal to an APEXi PFC is just that it is made by APEXi. They see APEXi and think "Oh! They make a pretty boost controller, I need a PFC!"

I tay get a Haltech. If you want a "Commander" style interface, get the Wolf 3d v4.

On a side not, when you install a PFC into a GTX, what does it do with the OMP? does the PFC run it, or do you have to disable it and run premix?

so, how many tuners for the PFC are there in the states? Last I heard there were 2, and one of them wouldn't touch rotaries. If you live anywhere besides Cali, you're screwed for professional tuning on a PFC. It may be a viable option overseas, but I think an EMS that you can't hook a laptop up to and datalog is worthless. Hopefully I'm misinformed on some of this, but these are all reasons that I look at the PFC as a somewhat "fluff" computer. Like I said, hopefully I'm wrong... the plug'n'play aspect of a PFC is pretty appealing though...

What exactly makes it a "good ems"? I'm curious.

I use a PFC.......in my 88 GXL.......but that's only because it adequately controls my twin turbos.

In all honesty I think it's a great system for FD owners (or me) who 1)want to keep the sequential turbo setup 2) Don't want to hack things to peices or 3) Just want to plug things in and have a richer base map that's easily modded if you do some upgrades.

As for FC owners. It offers nothing except control of the OMP over a haltech. At that, you can switch front covers with 86-88 and adapt a mechanical pump if your good. You CANNOT use a laptop or datalog with a PFC. Without the Excel software you are locked out of changing base maps and a boat load of other features that are great on the PFC. With Haltech you have full realtime control of everything.

As for PFC support, it is true that only 2 shops in the US actually have the excel software. They are NOT however the only shops that will work on the PFC. HOWEVER, there are no shops that support a 89-91 PFC in any way that I know of.

I say to each his own, but the only reason I can see for using a PFC on an FC is to say, "I did it". But to many that's what my REW conversion is, but that's another story.

You have any more info on doing that switch, and know of any sites w/ info?
And what do you mean by "if your good"

I've not heard of anybody actually doing this mod, but it's something I've thought about. What it would entail is switching the front cover from an 89 and replacing it with an 86-88, that has the mechanical OMP. The problem is that the mechanical pump has to have a rod that goes to the throttle linkage to moderate how much oil is injected. I'm not sure any benifits or pitfalls of wiring it open (it's something to look into). That's where the "if your good" part comes in. You would have to fabricate some kind of linkage for the rod.

That's all I can tell you really. I don't know what's needed or anything and I don't need to do it. I'm sure someone else can help you a little better if you post something.
