Potential project

This guy I am talking to is willing to trade his Fc for my MX-3. But he says one of the apex seals is blown, worth it? My MX-3 has a crappy waterpump and over heats. Might blow up if not kept cool and full of liquid. How much to fix the apex seal problem and (potential other propblems), it a N/A 88 GXL

well from the way it sounds you dont know a whole lot about the rotary engine. IMO that is a quiet a bit of work. first off you will need to know how to completely dissasemble and reassemble the engine. you will need a gasket kit and new apexseals. chances are that the rotor and rotor housing may be bad from the apex seal going to. those two parts can be pretty expensive too. if i were you i would keep the mx6 and fix your current problems.. it would more than likely be cheaper in the long run.

Need more details on both cars. What is the MX-3 worth? How mechanical are you? Do you have tools and work space. A full rebuild kit is 800-1000. What kind of shape are the 2 cars in?

You can find a decent 7 for less than the price of a rebuild kit, why do you want a 'this' car etc. etc.l etc.?

I agree with all the info given thus far. I am fairly mechanical myself and I went and got help swapping motors in my FC.

The rebuild kit will run you $800 or more.....finding a used rotor and housing may be necessary. If the apex let loose, chances are it embedded in the rotor (ruining it of course) and scoured the housing as it spun (ruining it too).

You are probably looking at $1000-1500 to properly rebuild this thing yourself, by the time you figure in gaskets and lost nuts/bolts with the kit.

Unless this car had some mods that raise the worth to you, I wouldn't do it.

On the other hand: IF you are mechanically inclined and can at least pull and re-install the engine, find a used engine from a wreck or something and drop that in. It will buy you some time until you can do a proper rebuild.

Is this going to be your primary/only vehicle? I wouldn't recommend doing that if you get cold weather and snow/ice where you live. My FC handled alright in the winter weather, but I bought an Escort to drive in the winter to let my FC sleep.

Just my .02

Yeah if you live in eugene oregon Im sure that you get snow in the winter. i drive my car in the snow but very carefully with all seasons and sand bags. It does ok but I would love to have something else to drive during that time instead of the T2. As for your problem you would be better off buying a new water pump(what 150-200) because it sounds like thats your only problem. Then I would sell your car outright if you still want an fc and buy one that runs. Your looking at a lot of time and about 1000 min. Also if it is your only car a few weeks of down time

No not my only car, I have a 93 FD, 01 Impreza 2.5Rs, 85 Hachi Roku (Corolla GTS), and the 93 MX-3. I don't like the MX because it's front wheel drive. I'm pretty sure it will blow up with out the water pump by the end of the week. As per snow HaHaHa we never get snow down in Eugene, OR it's a valley and It snows maybe every seven years down in it. That type of weather doesn't bother me I drift my Hachi all the time so a little slippage is easy to work with. Plus my FD slips enough for all my cars, I found an N/A 13b out of a FC for 300 to swap in. Probrably have a friend help me or do it for me. I am pretty sure some of you know him he is a Rx Guru. Jeff Hoskinson, haven't talked to him yet about it but I am going to ask him to check out the car for me.
