possibly will buy members car but need help!!!!

it is an 87 with a new engine. the engine is an s5 but when i look at the engine bay pic it has the s4 mass airflow sensor still. it seems he is getting bad gas mileage and i hope that is the only problem. i thought that when you change the engine over you also need to have the s5 mass airflow sensor as well, if not then how does that work because the plugs are different. would getting the sensor changed, getting an safcII and adjusting the tps fix the problems as well as the timing?

ok, this is most likley what the owner has done, he probably installed a S5 block but in order to not have to go through the trouble of switching over the ECU and lots of other things he just put on S4 components, like the engine front cover for the OMP, MAF, intake manifolds, waterpump, sensors, ect.. the engine is still a S5 but just with S4 parts. I've done this swap before and it's no big deal really. Just make sure the block it's self is S5, I forget how you can tell, maby someone elce can help him out.

oh, and by the way, if it is still using the S4 ECU then you cannot switch over to a S5 MAF, if you do this it would involve changing the ecu and wiring harness aswell as switching the left over S4 parts to S5. not really worth it.. unless you just go stand alone then you can just toss the maf and other sensors in the garbage.

pretty much what he said. once the pics are up, then we can tell if it's an S5 core ONLY or an s5 longblock.

doing this swap what would make him get crappy gas mileage. he only has 7k on the rebuild/motor. he did say that he needs the tps adjusted and idle. he is getting horrible gas mileage something like 7-10 mpg. would adjusting the timing and tps properly get it up to atleast 15 and even higher if i used a safcII. i just wanna make sure i can atleast get 15-20 mpg on highway and street. it also has a streetport (stage II).

the easiest way to tell if the block is s5 is there isnt an egr valve on the top of the block on the s5, the egr hole on top of the motor is not there.... other than that, i dont think you can tell since the electronic omp is gone!

but a street port would not make it get mileage that bad would it? if i do get this car i will get a safcII. i would be happy getting 15 mpg, is that possible on this car? this has to be my daily driver for a while.

this is what he has done to it

I'm selling my 87' base rx-7 it has a clean title and the following

-New S5 motor built by Atkins Rotary, has a stage II street port and 3mm apex seals. Purchased 10/03 has about 7k miles
-Tranny was rebuilt 01/03
-Jacobs Rotarymaster Ignition
-Erebuni full body kit #370
-17" Ricochet RS limited gunmetal wheels w/polished silver lip
-fairly new viper red paint job
-K&N BOV style air filter
-Pacesetter header
-2 1/4" exhaust piping
-Megan hi-flow cat
-Megan mufflers
-RP dual belt alternator pulley
-air pump removed
-fairly new fuel pump, starter, etc.

Car runs strong is pretty reliable, gets me to college, work, and home everyday. The engine still needs a little work to be 100%, just little adjustments like the TPS and timing, and probably some fuel tuning. The body is in great shape except for a little damage to the passenger side of the front bumper, I have the piece its an easy fix for anyone who wants to do it. I'll include a pic to show the damage.

send any questions to deuchbag2000@yahoo.com
