Possible buy

Hey guys I joined the forums not too long ago but without an RX-7 of my own I don't really find much to post about here on the forums. I'm hoping to change that real soon and I just found an 88 that a guy is willing to sell for $1,800. Personally I don't know how good of a deal this might be so I'm going to ask for some feedback from more knowledgeable people here on the forums. It currently has 128k original miles on it, some rust on the sun roof, no ac, and to quote the guy "There are a few other things that wouldn’t be a problem on a newer model used car." Any feedback I can get would be highly appreciated.

Offer $1500.

Not much else to go on there... No pics, no major description, or even model...
It's worth what you think it's worth..

Like you said he didn't really give a big description and I'm waiting for an email reply about the model. The car is maybe an hour to an hour and a half away so not too far but even if I were to go I wouldn't really know what too look for. As far as pictures go this is also something I'm waiting on since the only picture given is the one below.

I'd go less than that if it's an n/a, especially if the body is crappy. I'd pay that for a TII though. 128k is kinda getting towards rebuild time, and you'll pay more 1500 for a rebuild.

For comparison, I paid 1200 for my n/a. 105k miles, excellent body and interior, ran great, just needed a throwout bearing (not immediately, I put another 10k on it before I replaced it and the clutch). But every market/area is different. If you want the car, you'll pay what he asks in the end.

That is a SE or "base model".... It is the least desireable in my eyes.. 4 lug with smaller brakes.

I wouldnt pay over $1200 for any reason for that car.. UNLESS it has like 40k original miles on it.

i paid 1200 for my 86 and it had 3600 worth of tires and rims, with a brand new crate 13b thrown in, all that was wrong was clutch... so dont spend to much on a car that may need another 1-2k just to run correctly specially if its almost rebuild time

Well thanks for the advice guys. I decided to wait on it for a couple of reasons but the main one is I think I'm going to do my homework so I know what to look for next time around.

128k on a base for $1500 would be an OK deal assuming everything about it is pretty good and it's clean..
One with some rust and "old car issues" certainly isn't worth that..

And for the next one: http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/buy1.htm << Buying guide so you'll know what to look for ^_^

This is very true. FCs are common as dirt in some parts of the country and super rare in others. I'm guessing where you are they're not uncommon because you're near a large city and not in the Rust Belt. Still, if you find a nice car that meets your needs and is running well, I don't think even $1800 is too much. If it has a clean interior and nice paint, I'd pay a good bit more since that stuff is expensive to repair/replace.

FWIW, a 4-lug base car would also be low on my shopping list, but they are the lightest and can be a lot of fun too, depending on what you're looking for.

I paid $3500 for my s5 n/a. But I got it because everything was in good condition. The motor was past its 100k, but there were already upgrades on it that I didnt have to pay for (suspension, ignition, etc)

So overall, its worth whatever you want to pay for it.

They're actually pretty uncommon for me. I've been living in Katy, about half an hour from central Houston, for about 6 years now and I've only ever seen 1 FC in Katy. That was about 4 years ago when I saw it for sale, about two years before I even got my license. Other than that I know there are some people in neighboring towns that have them, but yet to see them in person myself. Every once in a while a new one pops up on craigslist and I was only thinking about jumping on this one since I finally have some money saved up (about $2.5k). My friend was telling me about a guy on local 240sx forums who has 1 or 2 FCs and an FD to hopefully get more info from him.

Well with this one I'm taking his word that it's in good running condition because I don't have time to go take a look at it during the week but what worries me is he only has that one picture to show yet mentions it needs a little restoration.

Indeed true, I probably have only seen less than 20 fc's in texas, and thats going on craigslist, car shows, and autocross events. I guess texas is a place were fc's are uncommon.

Also ask him to meet you half way, if he really wants to sell that car he would meet you, and this gives you a good start to see if there is anything wrong with it from just the drive to the meet up spot

Well, when I moved to the D.C. area in '05, I figured there would be tons of FCs here. There's a huge population and winters aren't very severe. So far, I haven't seen that many at all. When I needed a new one in '07, I spent several months looking at every car listed on Autotrader, eBay, Craigslist and on this forum within a 2 hour drive and all but two were pretty lousy.

I live in Houston and can tell you there is no shortage of them here. (In Dallas neither).

Maybe they just don't do well down in San Antone'?
