Whoa!&nbsp My pics got jacked!

Here's the entire write-up with text...

http://fc3s-pro.com/TECH/MODS/TURBO/wg.htm

A few of the old-timers should be familiar with the pages...
(Website is still under construction!)

is there supposed to be a writeup below the pics there Ted?

My question is how difficult is it to get to? I'm guessing you'd have to follow the write up for removing the turbo on the 2ndGen FAQ, intercooler etc comes off? How long would this job take a complete beginner? Do you need the car jacked up under the front? Pre cat unhooked etc...?

thanks,
Blake

I also want to know when you remove the turbo, where exactly is that wastegate, and which one should i drill? And do you just widen the hole or what?

basically yeah you just make the hole bigger. use the pictures for comparison. don't make it larger than the swing cover obviously... you'll see when you get to it.

I'm still waiting for a brief explanation on HOW to get to it. I believe you have to follow the FAW on getting the turbo off. Then pop it open somehow. It's the opening I'm not sure about.

Basically...

1. Remove turbo
2. Remove turbine housing from turbo
3. Remove backplate from turbine housing
4. Open wastegate flapper valve
5. Port the bejezus outta the hole!
6. Reassemble and reinstall

That's really all there is to it.

Man, I took that turbo out off of my spare engine that was first in my t2, and it took me half an hour to seperate the damn thing from the engine. I wonder how hard is it gonna be to take the turbo with manifold out of the car, when it's this hard to take it out of the siting engine.

Just buy a Turbonetics external wastegate.

Can you put an external waste gate on the stock manifold....I haven't seen it done.
I believe you want to "back cut" the WG hole alot so that there is a larger smoother approach to the WG hole, it is porting to increase flow after all. I back cut a ton and drilled the hole bigger than the seal on the flapper door using a cut down exh. valve as the new seal-as big as would fit in the turbo housing. It still wasn't enough; hopefully my 89+ turbo w/ both passages ported will hold boost down!

I saw on this board fairly recently a oic of an external WG welded to the stock manifold with the stock WG smoothed shut. Looked nice, and effective, but more of a pain in the *** than worth, I thought. I am about to buy a stock turbo with a ported WG, and ported inlet runners. How benneficial are the ported inlet runners?

Thanks guys. Yes, that did look well done, but a pain in the ***. Fabrication and more fabrication for the downpipe to fit up, and still the passage back into the downpipe looked small in that application. If the 89+ w/ ported WG doesn't work I'll go full to4 system-ha!

Blue TII.. Have no fear, the 89 wastegate is far better then the 87 (even when ported).. I ported my stock turbo wastegate quite abit and still had problems with it creeping when I set boost up beyond 11 psi (I would see up to 14 psi on it)... My current turbo, a t04 hybrid with 89 turbine and manifold and stock unported wastegate (Too much of a pain in the *** to try and port a series 5 wastegate. the flapper doesn't open all the way like on the series 4.. you'd have to grind away some of the housing to get the flapper to open up enough to get a die grinder in there.. or somehow remove the lever, which is welded on) holds boost without a problem.. 12 psi with no spikeing, and no creep no matter what temperature it is outside...

Yeah, that was a quick one, and it wasn't intended to have that info on it (unlike the TPS adjustment page).&nbsp I'll get around to putting more info soon...

I don't believe there is enough room to remove the manifold and turbo as a unit.
