Popcorn sound out of exhaust
Rotaries run uniquely high exhaust temps. Putting popcorn in your exhaust will surely make popping sounds.
Perhaps someone was hungry and lacked a microwave?
I would check your exhaust for popcorn at once that could obstruct exhaust flow.

its caused by the fact rotary motors run quite rich the sound you are hearing is this extra fuel igniting in the exhaust. Typically called a back fire. With a free flow exhaust it would produce fireballs or flames.

The loud exhaust note will do the same. Fireballs/flames can and should be kept to a minimum. Also with a free flow exhaust other problems will arise whether you are turbo or N/a. I know because i have both
I <3 free flowing exhausts. I've never had any problems with either turbo or n/a. The only problem I can see "arise" is better gas mileage and helping the engine breathe better.
