Question Please Vote :) important

Well, the tranny is coming out on tuesday. I have a contact in vancouver. Rotary motorsports rebuilds trannys for 400-500 depending on gear damage. 300 for a used tranny with a 4month rebuild, 6 month warranty for the rebuild. I have a part time job so i'll have to save up for a bit. Anyways check it out. 4th gear only works so maybe there is come gear damage, not sure how to rebuild one

I say save for a few months and get it rebuilt. A junkyard trans can be just as bad as the one you remove. And don't try to do it yourself....There's a reason transmissin rebuilds cost so much: special tools and LABOUR.

The transmission from the junkyard has a 4 months warranty, doesn't this insure that the tranny isn't screwed up? Or they just jerry rig it to not blow up? until 4 months?

Who knows....When you consider that most 2nd gen transmissions have problems, odds are you will have issues with the one you get from the wreckers....

i voted for getting one out of the J yard, witha 4 month warentee you should be able to tell if the transmission is bad, and its only 2 months less warentee than a rebuild. And with the J yard, your car will be on the road, if anything the J yard transy will buy you some time to save up for a complete rebuild of yours. but if you have time i would get the rebuild, just do it "right" the first time. Hope this helped man. smartass haha sorry man, just had to.

I also voted to save up and have it rebuilt. That's likely to be the most reliable way to have it done correctly.

Too many variables:
How long will you keep the car?
How bad is the damage?
How handy are you with Trannys?
Personally I'd pull it myself & fix it.
If it's FUBAR, the get the best J yard you can.
Put it in & fill it with synthetic gear lube..

Question tranny??

Well I will tell you that I had the tranny rebuilt and I think if I had to do it again I would have opted for a five speed from a JapSpec car. The rebuild allthough tight is much louder then before. It was explained that after the rebuild syncros and bearings the gears might not align the way they did before. I had rebuilt the tranny because it was starting to grind when shifting fast and bearing noise. It doesn't grind anymore but man sometimes the tranny howls. I have spoken to a few transmission specialist and they say it is common. The gears have worn a certain way and with new bearings and synchros it realigns them. The answer is you deal with the sound or you wait until everything settles

A Japspec tranny I think is taking a risk but no more then taking a risk with an engine. I guess I would have to say to base it on the cost. I wish I new before I rebuilt the tranny that this might be something that I should be concerned with. Remember replacing the gears gets very expensive.

Later,
Dave
