please help verify my oil leak.

No, I couldn't get a picture. I have a steadily dripping oil leak from the omp area. Today I cleaned the area real well, and got under it while running. I can now see the oil runnjng from between the omp and the exhaust manifold. I'm leaning toward a front cover. But I don't know where the dowel pins are, so I don't know how likely that is. I cannot see any oil from looking above, had the intake manifold off a while ago (I had the leak at the tme) but I saw no signs on top of the engine, the omp lines looked good. As far as the omp goes, I replaced the gasket for it, and the leak, from what I can tell does not come from the omp itself.

I'm perfectly capapble of the work involved with removing and installing the front cover, I just don't wanna do it if its likely a dowel pin.

Its an s5 non turbo with 40k and 10+ years on the rebuild, I have no idea who rebuilt it. Thanks for any help.

its pretty common for the o ring between the metering pump and the front cover to leak. N350-14-604 i think.

Have you tried turning the car on and looking for leaks? That is how I found that my top oil cooler line is ruptured.

Did you replace the crush washers on the oil lines?

I did not, but I can see them from under the car, they are not leaking.

To re-ask my question, I can see oil running down from between the exhaust manifold and the omp (I can't see exactly where its comingnfrom). The omp does not appear to be leaking, nor does the omp lines, nor does the front main seal. I'm leaving towards front cover. My question is, is the leak I describe likely the front cover, or a dowel or tension bolt or somthing.

go to the auto parts store and ask for some black light dye. it goes in the oil. tell them that specifically.

put it in, go drive the car for 15-20 mins on the freeway.

come back, put a black-light light bulb in a drop light, or flashlight or whatever you can use and then look for the leak. it will shine some weird bright color at you. the highest point where you see the color is where the leak is coming from.

the dowel is on the other side, under where it says Mazda on the rotor housing. tension bolts are in the back.

so if its not the metering pump o ring or the pump, than it pretty much has to be the front cover. the few that i've seen actually blow the gasket out near the top, and the oil will run down the sides, its not always easy to find the leak without having the thing completely apart

Thank you very much. That's what I figured, but didn't wanna do all the work for nothing. I will have to order gaskets and orings.
