gang switch or master switch problem...

i have been having a domino effect of electrical problems with my car. i took it to an electrical shop, and they fixed the most of them, except for one thing:

the gang switch, or master switch for my power windows is shorting. i was told it was a 10 minute fix, i just need the part... where is the master switch (or gang switch) for the power windows? what does it look like? if i can replace it myself i will rather than pay an 80$ flat fee for 10 minutes worht of work. thanks

Please Help Power Window Problems!!!!

hi. so there is a short somewhere along the line for my power windows. i already posted this today, but noone has replied so i feel as though maybe i wasnt thorough enough in my description.

i took the car to an electrical shop to be looked at. they fixed the other problems but the one problem they could was the power windows. they told me i needed a "gang switch" or master switch, for the windows. there is a short somewhere in that switch and it needs to be replaced.

the window motors are fine, i attached a 12v to it and they roll up and down normally. but everytime i put a new fuse in the fuse box and give the car power, that fuse will blow. i even tried hard wiring the fuse to see if that would help, but it didnt.

it isnt the AAS the electrical guy checked that first. he said "gang switch" or "master switch" as it is most commonly called.

what is he reffering to? where is it? how can i fix this power window problem?

i am dirivng a 1986 rx7 NA GXL. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

probably because there is no easy place to start on a problem like this.

ok: does the fuse blow as soon as the car is turned on? ( when keyed power hits it )

if the fuse is blowing as soon as you hit the key power, it is grounded along one of the power supply lines.

in the switch in the drivers door there is an on/off switch. that is where your main power for the windows routs through, and gets devided to the motors.
trace that wire first and look for a short.

disconect the switch from the harness and try the fuse again.
if it blows, its along this wire.

you might have to get far into the harness if there was any mods done to the wiring.
eg: stereo installed on random power wire.

how bad is the wiring under the dash. is there lots of splicing going on?

if there was an overloaded circut at some point that melted the casing on one wire, it will spread and get worse over time. if that is what happened, you might have to take the harness out and replace some wires running to it.

the door switches are pretty rugged and can take a fair chunk of abuse, the plastic surounding the contacts will melt before the contact gives out.
take them out and take them apart, i had to rebuild mine to get the pasenger switch working.

there are only three screws that hold the driver door switch together. easy to pull apart and put back together. if there is a short there it will be easy to see.

Multiple threads merged. Only start one thread on a subject per member per problem.

Bump deleted. Bumps are forbidden here in the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section. Plus multiple threads on the same subject and bumps in less than 24-48 hours is considered rude anywhere.

Gang switch may be a term used in Canada... I don't know- never heard it before referred to that. But you have the drivers door power window switch called the master switch and the passengers door power window switch (called the slave in electrical speak). And if you don't understand what your mechanic is saying, either you need to ask, or you need to find a new mechanic.

If the switch is bad to the point it is blowing fuses, it is probably melted internally. You would need to replace it then. It could also be a wiring issue, but someone would have to actually remove the switch and check it out with a meter.

Here (again ) is the wiring diagram for the power windows:

i have my power switch on my driver side ( not for the window but to turn the system off ) bypassed, no problems like this have occured in mine. the switch is simple, just a rocker and a couple of contacts. i had to file a bit on the rockers to get clean contact, and put just a drop of solder on them.works fine.
if i am not mistaken the fuse is a 7amp, or 5amp.either way with a factory contact finish, it wouldnt cause the fuse to go as soon as the key is turned on ( i may be wrong ) i would suspect that the problem is coming from the hot wire getting to ground.
it is a vary simple circut with a couple of points where it could chafe bad enough ( into driver door ) to rub away casing and ground.
there should be no hot wires to the pasenger door with key power on or off, but there is one that runs to the driver door.
that would be where i would start.
