Talking Planning a rebuild or my spare motor.

Ok as soon as me and james get the big nut off I am saving up to rebuild it. I have some questions:

1 how clean does the area where it gets done have to be?
2 what tools are needed to check things for the tolerances and where would be a good place to find them?
3 WHat vendor sells a complete kit for a rebuild I have seen mazdatrix and atkins and RB also but whick one is the better deal?
4 What kind ot a grinder would I need for the porting I plan to do?
5 What are the largest templates sold for a street port and who sells them?

I appreciat all the help. thanx!

Your talking on that A/T car you bought right? You going to keep it A/T? www.rotaryrevolution.com sells rebuild kits as well but I think their sight might still be down. I could give you my .02 on the questions..but its best for the guys who have 20+ rebuilds to chime in!!!

I believe the price on the rebuild kit from them is like 500, but it doesn't come with side seals and some other little things that the RB kit does have. It comes with rotor bearing and such I believe though..

as for porting, you may want to leave that to someone who has done it before. ive seen porting done by people who had no previous experience with it, and terrible results.

some people you may want to contact are hypntz7 on this board, and BDC on teamfc3s.org

BDC has a nice half-bridge he did for Tony Farkas...sounded great.

if you get a template you may be able to port it successfully.

Porting yourself isn't that hard, but you need to know why what you do makes power in order to do it right.

Someone else on here said that the shape of the port is like 10% of the equation when considering the power potential of the porting. I couldn't agree more. What the charge has to encounter in the runner has far more effect on overall performance than the final shape of the port. No one can sell you templates for the runners...

I was just thinking the same thing re. runner shape vs. port shape. There is a ton of work needed to get the bowl and roof of a port runner smoothed and shaped. Here is my first attempt (na primary port):

Nope, just learned as much info as I could about how the port timing works and what different port shapes do. Stock ports really suck.
