Pics of my E-5/6&VDI setup

I decided to finally run the vacuum hose for my E-5/6&VDI setup; took a picture when I was done.

The blue is the route the airpump air (cadilliac air-ride pump, w/ a pressure tank that holds ~30PSI, relayed to a 12V+ Acc.) would take. The Green is where the line would/will go to the VDI. The yellow is the route for the 5th port, the red is for the 6th port.

Switch the car on, airpump builds 30PSI & pressurizes the blue line. Drive to 3800 RPM, the right solinoid opens up, pressurizing the red, and yellow lines (5/6th ports). Keep going to 5200, the left solinoid opens, pressurizing the green line (VDI). Drop down to 5000 RPM, the left solinoid closes, venting the green line. Down to 3500 RPM the right solinoid closes, venting the red & yellow lines.

The airpump (being pressure sensitive) won't pump again, until the tanks PSI drops below ~25PSI (which should take several 0-5200RPM runs)

Any questions/comments/suggestions/complaints?

I think it's kindof funny. I'm pretty sure I'm the first person to really get this together. All and all it cost $35 for an airpump (only one in a junkyard near me, and I couldn't pick'n'pull it ) and about 3 feet of vacuum hose total.

I'll get those up tomorrow. I'm having a connection problem tonight due to a hailstorm.

Excellant information and writeup. Do you need to use an aftermarket RPM switch with your installation?

Nope. Just plug the 5/6th and VDI solinoids in like stock. The factory (S5) ECU will do the rest.

I might take pictures today... there's snow on the ground, it's cold, and my heater fan went out on my furnace. That's priority #1

Wait, would this work on an S4? If you had the s4 you'd need the Rpm switch because the solenoid/vdi isnt' there right?

Correct. You'd need an RPM switch for the 5/6th, and you couldn't use the blue line (as it has a built in "Y"). But if you wanted to do this w/ a S4, hook it up the same (w/ 1 solinoid, and using a different metal line) and hook the RPM switch to the terminals on the solinoid.

Looks good, but I am missing the green line, maybe I am just colorblind but I see a yellow line, a blue line, and a red line. Otherwise good job.

Yes my man, you will need an RPM acuated switch to tell the solinoids when to kick on. How you are going to do this with one switch and two different things to operate at two different times beats me.

I was talking about if you used a VDI on an S4 as well as the 5/6 ports, two different things and two different times with one switch. I guess you'd have to get two RPM switches, one for 3800 and one for 5000 something.

5200, Chuck.

TheTwinTurboII; the green "line" is an arrow. That line would go to the VDI. Because the rack is in my floor, not on the car, I can't get a picture of that.

how are you venting the lines?i guess that will make your compressor run more,as the vent will leak air whenever the lines are pressuirized, right?

The way the solinoids work, the blue like will ALWAYS be pressurized, like part of the tank. Whenever the solinoids drop down below their set RPM, they vent hte air in their respective line.
