Unhappy Peculiar start problem

My car hasn't been starting up right away, all the time. This problem began a few weeks ago when I was replacing the backup light switch, and the upper and lower shifter bushings.

Take yesterday for example. My car started up fine on a cold morning (25-30 F) and I drove to work (~30 miles). I start up the car after work (8 hours, cold start) with no problems and drive home again. Shortly after getting home (15 mins, hot start) I had to leave for the dentist and the car started right up and drives the mile to their office. When I leave the dentist office (45-60 min.) for home, I start having problems. The car cranks but won't start. After doing this, three times the car barely comes back to life. I drive home. Two hours later, I go out again and the car starts right up.

I don't believe that I had a problem because I drove it a short distance because last weekend I drove to a store about 15 minutes away left my car parked for about an hour and had the same cranking problem without starting.

Let me hear your thoughts, I’d really appreciate it.

Flooded it, probally. Notice any smoke? If you got white smoke, flooded. Wire in a fuel cut switch. Do a search on the topic. I get the same problem sometimes, so I am actually on my way out the door to go install one!!

You know i don't remember any smoke, but i'll look for some next time.

What could i be doing that's causing it to flood?

I can usualy cold start my TII no problem. but hot starts are stupid, I havto pump the gas a tiny lil bit to get it going and i havto crank for like 2-5 seconds usualy. I have a damaged apex seal. so if u notice a performance difference, get a compression test done. just my two cents

I had the same problem. My car was flooding quite a bit on those short drives. It was all after I started modding my car. Have you done any mods lately? Mine started when I put a new intake on.
Finally it didn't start at all. I would try a fuel cut switch.
I personally did the ATF trick on my car, and I haven't had any problems since. If I start having problems again, I'll make a switch.

I did a compression test about 3k miles ago. i had 125-130 on the front rotor and 110-115 on the rear. That's not bad considering the engine is 175K miles young .

Most likely the cause is a leaking injector. I recommend the fuel cut out switch as a temporary fix. Mazdas are notorious for flooding out. Also check your water thermo sensor(sensor on back of water pump). If you can make a custom code checker and see if your ecu is pulling any codes. Low compression will also cause this problem. I drove my car for a year with a fuel cut out switch before my motor finally died, now waiting for rebuilt motor.

Yeah I have added a few of the standard mods like an intake and I noticed that when I was under my car the exhaust isn't the stock Mazda setup with two pre-cats. I had to get it replaced because the whole system rusted out. So now, I have a straight pipe back to the main-cat. It was kind of a nice surprise.

I also had my injectors cleaned in Dec. (by a Mazda dealership ). So i would hope that that's not the problem.

But, in general the problem is pretty rare, in the two and a half weeks that it has happened i think it has not started right up about 5 times.
