Passed smog...with a Haltech and a J-spec
Like the title says, I managed to pass CA smog 100% legitimately today with a Haltech E6K controlling an S5 J-spec motor. I didn't even have to pay the guy to pass visual No alcohol, no nothing... sweet
I pretested the car before hand to see what it was putting out, and the HC's were a bit high so i went out and leaned it out at 1700 rpm (to 14.7:1... it was a bit rich before) and backed the timing off five degrees (back down to mazda specs), and the car passed with relative ease I'll post the results later if anybody's interested. Man is that a relief
It was pretty funny, too, because I was worried that the car would overheat, so I flipped open the laptop and checked the temps while it was on the dyno and the guy was like "What's that" me: "Oh, it gets a data stream from the computer and displays it, cool, huh?" him: "Neat... that thing registers faster than my machine!"
On top of that I had the wideband display going the whole time, and the guy didn't care . At one point he asked me if i could program the engine with the Haltech (and he sounded kinda pissed), but I told him "Well, i'm not sure. I don't think so, but in any case I haven't touched it 'cause i'm scared to mess something up"
Anyway, i'm pretty happy about that. I just welded in a new "car-sound" 3" high-flow cat yesterday and installed new spark plugs this morning, but other than that I didn't do anything special.
Now, for that big turbo

I'm impressed! I've been thrown out of smog for air cleaners in past years. I'm surprised the guy even let you near enough to the car during test to see your laptop. I guess the burning question is what your engine bay looks like. If it looks stock you can get away with murder. A co-worker of mine has a '76 911 with an aftermarket turbo kit and motec on it. He always breeses right through. Of course he's got everything in the engine bay painted flat black and the car is not 'common' in how the engine bay lays out. Most smog techs have no clue what a CIS 911 ought to look like, but they see late '90s Honduhs all day long and know when a ricer is trying to slip through.

Did you data log the test? I would LOVE to know what your A/F settings were at idle & at 2500? I am smoging mine within the next wek or so .. and any tuning info you could give me would be great!
Thats where they test right? Idle ~750 & 2500? Thats where they tested my N/A on smog check 2 dyno machine.
BTW: was it on a dyno? Smog check 2?

inboost: After the pre-test in the morning i talked to him a bunch and asked him a bunch of questions -- he was a pretty cool guy. I also gave him a $5 tip for helping me understand how all the emissions work, so he was pretty cool with me I guess. As far as the engine bay goes, it's really stock looking i think. I put the stock airbox back on (OSH plumbing parts special ), and wrapped the haltech wiring harness in black electrical tape. Pretty much everything is where its supposed to be, and I told him the extra wires on the battery were for an aftermarket stereo the the PO had put on the car (even though they're for the Haltech). The guy mentioned that he doesn't see many rotaries come through, and I helped him find the L1 and T1 plug wires .
Rpeck: I didn't data log the test, but I was watching the AFR display as he was doing the test The test is actually done at 15mph and at 25mph, and he used 2nd and 3rd gears. This put the rpm at like 1750 and 2200 or so. During the pretest, the HC's were at 128ppm at 15mph, but the AFR was a bit rich (14.3:1) because i hadn't counted on that rpm (i thought he would use 1st and 2nd, which would give about 3000 rpm in both gears). The timing was also a bit advanced over stock levels (it's Hitman's stock S5 turbo map). Apparently if you retard the timing a few degrees, it will lower HC levels. They also check timing at idle, so I changed the trigger angle on the haltech to retard everything 5* (putting it perfectly in line). The car ran with a 15* timing split during the test. So, after the pretest and after I had retarded the timing, i went around town driving in 3rd and 4th with the brakes on at like 1700 - 2200 rpm, making SURE that the AFR stayed around 14.7:1 (leaned it out a hair). The 15mph test puts a reasonable amount of load on the car -- apparently 50% of the vehicles weight (that's what the smog tech said i believe). I was on load bars 6-9 i believe (so it was putting out a decent amount of power). NOx emissions were really low though (like 350 and 183, respectively, with limits of like 1000 and 800). If you lean it out, HC's go down and Nox goes up, so I had some room to bring HC's down if necessary it looked like. Not bad for a piece of **** 90 dollar 'car-sound' 'high-flow' cat (basically a 3" hole with some heat shielding i'm afraid ) The only trouble is that i'm pretty sure i can smell the cat disintigrating, but oh well... i'll worry about that in 2 years
Just realized i didn't answer your last question Rpeck: yes, it was on a dyno, 15mph and 25mph. I think it's called 'smog check 2', not sure though. I'll get the results from the car in a bit and post the breakdown here later tonight probably.

WOW. Was your motor ported at all....or just straight J-Spec? I have a Turbo motor in my GXL waiting to be started....with a Haltech E6a, T04, 550/1200 injects. Think I can get this to pass smog with a 3" catalytic? Did you keep the airpump? I have a Test Only due on the car before I get busy on it again....or I have to pay some guy $300 to smog it!

That reminds me of a time I had a Valvoline Instant Oil Change tech (loosely using that term) tell me my battery was "ok" when they were being secret shoppered by yours truely. (perks of my old job with General Electric)
Normally there would be no problems with some idiot saying he "looked at" the battery and it appeared ok. Except when the stock battery location is in the trunk. Dude was rather surprized when I was questioning how he "looked at" my battery, and actually got kinda miffed at my repeated questions "how could you tell it was ok?"
I wish I had a picture of the look on his face when I dropped the bomb on him that there was no way in hell he could've looked at my battery in his 15 point inspection and I didn't appreciate being lied to. His response was "would you like me to look at the battery?"
They also deflated my hot tires down to 35psi (from my cold setting of 42) and I hadn't approved that either.
I never did tell him I was also doing an inspection at the time. He probably would've cried.
Anyways, Manollis, That kicks *** that you passed. I'm very happy for you. Let the fun begin!

Jimmy, that is an awesome story
Manolis, great to hear! Most people don't have to worry about that stuff but it sure is nice to have the ability to pass it. I know Brian Cain uses a Vette e-pump for his but he doesn't have to worry about visual. I think visual is the biggest bag of CRAP. If it is clean, it is clean. Who cares how.
But I will echo Bebesito's comment and say, Gotta love Minnesota. *cough cough*

Yeah, normally I wouldn't let anyone touch my bimmer (I have issues letting anyone work on my cars as it is... even oil changes) but I was working 65hr weeks at the time and it was free as long as we filled out the survey.
I was pretty nervous going in because the oil pans are cast aluminum, and they're in short supply due to bottoming out and being cracked. When I owned that car it was 150 bucks for a pan at a junk yard. I had also heard horror stories of crossthreading in the soft aluminum.
They didn't score too highly.
I agree with the emissions "passing" or not. However, lots of people run the isopropel to get it cleaned up for the test. ****, I welded a pipe down the center of my bimmers cat, having cut the thing in half above the welds so it wouldn't be visible for the mirror check. (this was back when we had the inspections here) My bimmer smogged BETTER with a Conforti chip and open exhaust. Try to explain that one....

.. but you'd be living in New Jersey. : | That's what I don't get: everyone outside of California is like 'HAHA ROFFLE NO CATS HAHA YOU CALIFRNIANS HA ^_^'.. but if you had hung out in LA in the mid-80s, you'd understand why things are so strict out here. Look at how bad Dallas is right now, it's disgusting.
Don't worry, you'll be playing catch-up with California soon enough (just like you always do). : o

Anyway, i'm pretty happy about that. I just welded in a new "car-sound" 3" high-flow cat yesterday and installed new spark plugs this morning, but other than that I didn't do anything special.
Now, for that big turbo
