Unhappy painted flames

last night, a good friend and i we're debugging some weird fuel pump electrical problems and trying to make my gxl start again when the fun began. we had previously pulled the fuel lines to see if they were working correctly and neglected to reinstall them, thinking we would wait untill we fixed the problem then do it, also...i had pulled a spark plug boot off to check that the spark plug puller was the right size, got distracted by my buddy and left it hanging.we finally found the problem, the guy who owned the car before me didn't replace the fuel pump relay, he jumped it...and i had somehow kicked the jumper wire loose getting in or out of the car....my buddy hooks it back in, hold the clutch in and goes "dude...see if the car will start" we were both so excited about finding the problem, we totally forgot about the fuel hoses and spark plug boot hanging mere millimetres from each other in the bay....i crank the car and immediatley hear a "woosh" noise, i look up and my car is on fire. there was nothing we could do...lucky me, i live in a pretty busy subdivision and this guy comes running up like lightining with one of those mini fire extinguishers and tada puts it out. a few minor problems from teh fire but all else is ok...thank god noone got hurt...stupid mistakes almost cost me my car and could have cost someone their life...now ive got flame shaped smoke stains all under my hood...last night was interesting, to say the least....now i hope i can get it running again before the rallye this sunday...sigh

omg. well hey we were doing a compression test on my engine and forgot to take the EGI fuse out. so my friend left one of the spark plug wires right next to the + battery terminal. welp, it sparked and blew the caps off the battery, spitting battery acid all over the place.

bad times.

Damn, that sucks dude, glad you're ok and your car isn't totally shot.

One day I was taking all the intake manifolds off, and for some reason I took the secondary fuel rail off... Well, I forgot to either lube, or replace the injector o-rings. They both crimped up... The one closest to the front literally sprayed fuel out, and the one closest to the firewally was dripping. After a nice long idle and a short driving... I realise smoke coming out the hood. Thank god nothing caught fire (I think). Just alot of smoke. But fuel was literally spraying... and dripping onto you guessed it.. the exaust manifold/heat shield.

Again, glad you're OK, and thank god that dude had a mini extinguisher.

i think the measure twice cut once principle applies here. i know it's exciting as hell to see if you get something fixed but damn you gotsta be careful when trying to start up a project "in progress". just be careful and i'm glad ot hear everything is ok.

Talking the day after

totally stoked! we cleaned up the engine bay really well (ok, it was half *** but its ok) reconnected everything, i traded the fuel pump i had just bough that i didn't need for new spark plugs and wires (got 60$ back too yeay!) and hooked it all up, did a little bit of soldering and wire connecting, put in my thermostat and finally reconnected that ground wire....she fired right up on the first try and is currently running better than ever before!! man i can't wait to get her on those mountain roads where she belongs

thanks folks!

Greg

Have you checked out the Richmond VA thread in the NE RX7 forum? You just missed an Autocross this past sunday at VMP Run by VMSC, the next one is Sept. 26 they're fun.
The BRR SCCa is also hosting one out in Verona Sept 19.
Have you drive Route 33 over the mountains? it rocks.
