Does anyone know of a common overheating problem for rx-7's? I am new to the rotary motor. I just purchaed a 1989 RX-7 GTU for real cheap and it gets really hot. I also notice that there is some radiator fluid on the bottom side of the car. I was wondering if anyone knows if its a leak or the thermostat? Please let me know what other info you need to help me diagnose the problem.

Does it over heat when you go above 80mph? do you have a coolant leak?

Yes I dso notice some leakage and it somkes if I drive down the highway for about 5mi or so it starts to smoke.

 

ok....get a MAZDA thermostat...those stant ones from pepboys wont do...is the stock fan shroud still on? check if the fan is blowing while its parked....check hoses(upper, lower heater core) and check the weeping hole(under the water pump) consult hyans/FSM.....happened to me recently and found out i busted my second fan clutch...so im converting to efan to fix the problem once and for all

 

yes the fan works fine. I will goahead and get the thermostat its inexpensive and I have no clue how old it is. i am going to pull the radiator saturday im just glad i live 10min form work and its cold out.

 

Yea if its the fan clutch, don't even bother looking for a replacement from mazda.. way to much ****** money.

 

Oh if its the fan which its not (yet) I will upgrade not replace with stock parts

 

Make sure your water pump isnt shot also..

 

remember when you flush out the radiator when you fill it back up make sure you get all the bubbles out of it before you replace the cap. Efans works great man I have one too...took out the factory and it seems like I have more room to work with now under the hood.

in an attempt to fix my inconsistant over heating problem i've decided to switch to the efan setup....while taking the fan clutch off, i've noticed that the double ended tap screw was very loose.....i managed to take all of them off using just my fingers....would this be the cause of my inconsistant overheating? bad contact between the engine and the fan clutch?...

 

I have an overheating problem now as well, when i go 120KMH, heat gauge goes up until i turn on the vent with the heat toggle all the way up.

Coolant is also being used up really fast... Anyone know what the problem could be?
