Overheatin' blues...

OK, I posted recently about having air in my coolant lines which I just couldn't seem to get rid of. Well, this is the third time I've had a problem with air in the lines, the other two times I was able to successfully bleed it out. But after changing some coolant hoses + thermostat a month ago, I have been unable to successfully get the air out.

Today the "add coolant" buzzer had a different nature, though. Instead of going off only when stopped, it buzzed constantly when driving and tended to stop when the car was stopped. At the grocery store I popped the hood and noticed the coolant overflow tank had filled up and was smoking.

I got my groceries, came back out and started it up. The S5 temp dial just creeped past 1/2 and I shut it down, walked home and came back a few hours later to get it back home.

Looking underneath my car, I saw a puddle of water dripping from the weep hole about where the water pump is -- does this mean my water pump HAS to be replaced? Is it possible that it could be anything else?

I just want to make sure before I drop the $100 on a new water pump (or $200 if I need the housing [should I go ahead and do that too?]).

yes, replace your water pump. The hole is there just for that reason, and search.

I replaced my entire coolant system, IE t- stat, water pump, rad, hoses, before I fiqured out I had a bad seal( my first fc 4 years ago). All I am saying is DOUBLE CHECK/reseach the FAQ before you spend the money on parts. BTW try to bring something to the thread besides " dont listen to him", IMO that's a a cop out unless you expain your damn case! I guess that is what you get when you deal with " MY DD IS A HONDA !" ( BTW why in the hell do you think an exclamation point belongs at the end of that statment?)Or, dont listen to me and spend money like a fool. Either way good luck, and I hope it is the WP.

or get a tapered barb fitting at home depot that will screw on the end of a hose. remove heater hose and plug in the garden hose. BTW you don't turn it on full blast .

It definitely sounds like the water pump...

On another note though, it doesn't hurt to do some coolant maintenence, i.e. new hoses, t-stat, etc. because lets face it, in most cases that stuff is all at least 15 years old as far as you know, and could likely stand to be replaced. It may not have solved the problem to buy those things this time around, but it probably saved you a problem down the road...

yeah, I've replaced a majority of the hoses and the thermostat already. the only thing I havent done is flushed the system since I bought it in june (I know, I know -- I didnt have access to a garden hose..)

I should hope it's not a coolant seal. there's never been a trace of smoke from that car.
