Overheatin' blues...
OK, I posted recently about having air in my coolant lines which I just couldn't seem to get rid of. Well, this is the third time I've had a problem with air in the lines, the other two times I was able to successfully bleed it out. But after changing some coolant hoses + thermostat a month ago, I have been unable to successfully get the air out.
Today the "add coolant" buzzer had a different nature, though. Instead of going off only when stopped, it buzzed constantly when driving and tended to stop when the car was stopped. At the grocery store I popped the hood and noticed the coolant overflow tank had filled up and was smoking.
I got my groceries, came back out and started it up. The S5 temp dial just creeped past 1/2 and I shut it down, walked home and came back a few hours later to get it back home.
Looking underneath my car, I saw a puddle of water dripping from the weep hole about where the water pump is -- does this mean my water pump HAS to be replaced? Is it possible that it could be anything else?
I just want to make sure before I drop the $100 on a new water pump (or $200 if I need the housing [should I go ahead and do that too?]).

It definitely sounds like the water pump...
On another note though, it doesn't hurt to do some coolant maintenence, i.e. new hoses, t-stat, etc. because lets face it, in most cases that stuff is all at least 15 years old as far as you know, and could likely stand to be replaced. It may not have solved the problem to buy those things this time around, but it probably saved you a problem down the road...

yeah, I've replaced a majority of the hoses and the thermostat already. the only thing I havent done is flushed the system since I bought it in june (I know, I know -- I didnt have access to a garden hose..)
I should hope it's not a coolant seal. there's never been a trace of smoke from that car.
