Hello everyone.

I have done a little looking around on this forum, and it seems as though this is the right place for me. In a nutshell, I love RX-7's, but don't own one yet. Im 19, just started a decent paying job, and am looking to purchasing a 2nd gen w/13bt. Since many of you have years of experience, I was curious as to if any of you had any advice for me. I know it can be a costly endeavor, but it seems like the more research I do, and the more stories I read, the more I want to get one. I've done some in depth work on classic cars, and know a bit about Triumphs, but something keeps pulling me towards an fc. I love everything about the cars, and have been dieng to get one for a few years now. I almost just impulsively bought an 89' N/A 13b, but am trying to tell myself no (nothing against n/a, but I would like a turbo' ). I truly anticipate any advice anyone can offer me, and I think this is going to be a great place for me to learn a lot about the cars that I long for.

lol...welcome.... is this car gonna be a daily driver or just a fun car? Just be prepared for little stuff to break and mess up!!!! Make sure u do a compession test on the 7 before you buy it, it will save you alot of money in the long run....

 

Not really. It's ALOT cheaper than getting a new car. I find the 7 just as reliable, if not more so, than other cars of its age.

Saying that, I will admit there is a lot of repairs needed. But, just keep in mind the cars at least 15 years old.

I think im going to get the 89' N/A, once I go check the compression. I personally think 1500 is a deal, considering the body is in fairly good shape, never been wrecked, etc. It has 110k miles on it, and im going to go check it out in a few weeks. If I end up with it, and can maintain and drive it for a year, I'll have plenty of money saved up to put a turbo II in it, or buy another FC to put a ton of money into.

If I get an rx7 its going to be my new gf

Edit: Probably just a nice and quick daily driver. I figured if im going to bust my *** I should do it for something I can truly enjoy.

Lol, my girlfriend told me not to get mine because it was only a 2 seater..I got it anyway, and she got used to it, so everything worked out nicely in the end.

 

My fast only drives in f#(*in' two seaters

 

an n/a is a good place to start. Good call on checking the compression. Do the normal old car checks... look at the interior for example for rips etc. Drive the car and note any hesitations, especially around 3800-4000 rpms. Have the guy start the car COLD. If it's stock it should hold at 3000rpm for a few seconds then drop to like 1500ish, then slowly get down to 750. It should idle relatively smooth and should hold a decent idle with the A/C turned on.

OK - I have nothign against N/A's at all, don't take this that way (I've owned 4 n/a's in my life and DD an 86 GX right now)

But you will end up regretting your purchase within a year once you have it running how you'd like and you get bitten by the speed bug. If you even think you want a TII, hold out for it. Trust me, you'll be far happier in the end.

My only recomendation before purchasing is to set your spending limit on buying the car, and then go over it by 500-1000 dollars. You will end up with a far better car, and less maintenance in the end, which means your 500-1000 dollars was actually money saved.

Bt if you get the N/A, you'll still be happy, they're great/fun cars.....youll just end up getting bit by that crazy little speed bug much sooner than if you bought a TII.

 

Guys, the advice really is a great help, thanks a lot. Classicauto, im putting some thought into holding out for a tII, sounds like a good idea, hopefully I can force myself to wait

 

My advice would be to find an S4 n/a, drive it like you stole it 'till you blow the motor, and swap for a 13BT or a 13B-REW (Depending on how much money you have). Make sure you get an LSD and it's clutch type. Umm... that's about it from me.

You should be able to find an S4 n/a, running for under a grand pretty easily.

 

Or you could just build it from the start. Buy a shell and then look for the motor and tranny.
