Only seen one like this i think...

I am exploring various intake options on my 2nd gen....Everyone goes the air filter up front in a cold air box---always! Well I was thinking today at work and decided to go another route, comming staight out of the throttle body and into the MAF then into a "cold air box over where the charcoal canisted is now... I was laso thinking of putting some "shark gills" on the hood over the cold air box...I mean why not eliminate all the bends in the tubing? Wouldn't it work better? Also having th eMAF so close to the TB, is this going to effect performance at all, Any ideas? here's the connector I fabbed...it leads a strait piece of tube right over to where the canister area is..

I have seen pictures of it mounted there before. There is a thread about it a while back and I believe the guy blew his engine. Dont remember if it was because of this mod or not.

Given it's large size compared to the engine's output, I doubt the stock intake duct causes much restriction at all, so I wouldn't expect significant gains from this.

You will also need to put a lot of effort into making sure the heat from the exhaust directly below is kept away from the intake air. Otherwise the minimal gains from the shorter duct will be far outweighted by the hotter intake air.

I considered that... I am either going to cut into the fenderwell and have half the filter in the fenderwell... or completely seal off a box except for a 3" tubing running from the front grill to the box....not sure i'll do what everyone thinks will work best.. What about the maf bieng close to the tb..any negative effects?

If you were going to go to the trouble of doing this then it would be worth your while for sure of using the stock 'scutlle panel' at the base of the windscreen wipers there as an air feed, you might even find some gains from ram air since its in a favourable pressure zone for this, much like the front bumper actually.

Of course this means you'd need a totally sealed box, but I have seen pics of this done on quite a few rally/race cars actually...

That would completely defeat the pupose of shortening the stock duct. Instead of the stock (3") duct with its "crappy restrictive bends", you'd have your new 3" tube with exactly the same bends to get to the same place as before.

Easier would be to leave the stock duct where it is and build a heat shield around a pod in the stock location (much easier location to work in and less direct heat to deal with). Run your cold air duct from the nose of the car to the filter as planned.

Sorry if you think I'm knocking all your ideas, but I'm just not seeing how this is better than the more traditional ways. These are usually the most popular simply because they work the best.

Seeing the aerodynamic pic, i see why santiago was trying so hard to get acceptance for his cold air kit. Looks like its in a favorable positon. I myself like the cold air box setup NZ speaks of, cleaner, easier, cheaper.
