One Speed Taurus Fan and other e-fan questions

Preface:
I know I'll probably get crucified for asking this for one reason or another. I understand this ahead of time. I have done some searching.. Maybe I just didn't find the answer on my on. Anyway here goes...

I went to the yard the other day and the only taurus fan I could find was a one speed model. At the time I wasn't aware there was two models so it didn't come to my attention that I was buying potentially the wrong fan. Then when I found out I figured since most everyone says the low-speed setting on the two speed models was all you really need I figured maybe I did alright.

Is the one speed fan enough? Is it too much or not enough?

Also, to save money I'm thinking about just getting a set temperature fan controller. Now I read that Aaron Cake said to set the potentiometer version to 190*. So I should get a 190* fan controller correct?

Then comes the question of relays.. I have seen some people here get away just the 30amp relay. But on other forums (particularly the 4x4ing ones) they talk about these huge 80-90 amp relays or just a 40amp one. One group used a fan controller by DCC. I think it was. but it was $100 (it also included everything but wire I believe.)

I think this basically covers everything I wanted to ask. Basically I wanted to know about the one speed taurus fan and the fan controller. What's recommended. I just want to install this is basically forget about it. Maybe If possible and not to difficult to wire a buzzer or light that will go off if the relay or whatever fails.

I hope Jack Hild finds this.

Thanks, Eric

I have a two-speed Taurus fan and only use the low speed...but I have no AC, which might make a difference.

Go back to the junkyard and look at the Fords again...many of the Tauri (?) have a relay and fuse setup that can be easily adapted to fit our cars.
The fuse- in a nice waterproof housing- is mounted on the cylinder head just at the valve cover. The relay is a bit further downstream but can be found by tracing the harness.

The beauty of this setup is you have all the matching plugs/wiring needed for the install and Ford has already figured out the component specs.

Look for taurus's with with the 3.8liter(or 3.6l ,can't remember offhand)motor as those have the 2 spd. fans. The 2-speed shourd also doesn't have the cutout in the corner like the single speed Taurus 3.0 liter etc. fans, so it's a little nicer looking.

So basically I can't use the one speed fan? Or no one has tried using it?

You can use it. My 88TII had one on it and it worked fine. It is a slightly different fit than the 2-speed, but it cooled just fine. Comparing it to the 2-speed fan it was somewhat stronger than the low speed and somewhat weaker than the high speed.

I have no idea how many amps it pulls; the setup was wired directly through the adjustable thermostat w/remote probe and it worked fine. That seemed to be a bad idea so I immediately added a relay to protect the switch.

Good Luck!

If it overheats, but I would assume that someone who is trying to change a part of their cooling system would have enough sense to watch the temp on the vehicle. But seriously speaking, all you would lose is a few minutes/hours of time if it doesn't work out. Which is nothing compared to the hours already spent under the hood lol

Edit:

I too have been thinking about going to an E. fan. The clutch is going bad on my stocker.
Does anyone have any input on a 91-96 Escort fan? (The one reccomended by Rotary Ressurection)
Or will it be relatively the same as getting a Taurus fan?

I think my buddy has it and it works for him. Anyway my guess is now if it cools down a six or eight cylinder effectively then all you really have to worry about is the charging system and fan coverage (some will be too big or small).
