Unhappy one problem gets fixed and another arises :(

Well, from my prev posts I had thaught i had bad coolant seals, until i changed the thermostat and found a small river of coolant comming out of the water pump, with that fixed the car ran beautifully for about a week.... then tonite I was leaving work and the battery seemed low as i started her up, I let her idle to warm up for about 5 min, went to take off, all the lights dimmed and on the way home it was like the lights wearent even on, it was hesatateing like mad aswell, got home, called a friend of mine, he told me to start it up and pull one of the battery cables off to see if the alternator was working, well the car died instantly after the cable was pulled, but he also said that since its a diffrent engine type then what hes used too it might do that anyways, anyone else had this prob? Do I need a new alternator or to just replace the battery? It's a 88 n/a vert. Also the idiot lights have decided to stay on all the time now, but back before they only stayed on all the time at low idle.

Any advise would be verry mutch appriceated.

Richard

Sounds like yer alternator is dead. Pull it out and take it to Autozone and they'll check it for free.

In the future, dont do this to test it. It could result in frying your electrical system. Use a Voltmeter or like suggested, take it off and get it tested.

i agree with ruffryder.
it can cause serious voltage spikes and kill everything.

I work at Advance Auto, you can leave it on the car, and drive it to them, and they can test it on the car while it is running.
