what he was saying is that the waterjacket is different on the series IV. The s4 housings have further apart
spark plugs, so the jackets on the irons would have a slightely different shape around the spark plug holes

oops, let me clearify. Are the front and rear housing able to be swapped between engines. Could I take a front rotor housing from an s4 and use it as a rear rotor housing in a different motor?

I don't think there would be any problems, the o-ring would be the same shape since all of these engine are the same epitrochoid shape.
I've never tried though, so I'm not sure.

Yes you can swap front, rear or intermediate housings between any year model engine from '86-'91. They are all interchangeable. So yes you can use an S4 end plate on an S5 block. The rotor housings can be interchanged between the S4 and S5 but you would have to swap the out in pairs and not mix and match due to the spark plug location differences. You could even use 3rd gen rotor housings just don't interchange the other 3rd gen parts unless it is an entire swap. I hope this answered the question.
