oil pump chain
No one knows the slack tolerance in the oil pump chain? Come on guys. I thought this forum was a little smarter than that.
I guess I'll have to wander over to Nopistons where they have some real rotorheads...

I couldn't find it either. I have searched everywhere and I have found two different answers. One said not more than 3/8in another said not more than 1/2in. I have 3 used chains lying around and all of them were exactly 1/2in slack. I just thought it was strange that all my used chains had a 1/2in of slack. One of the chains only had 80,000 on it. If these engines last 150,000 plus, why is my oil pump chain already out of spec after 80,000?
Thanks for any helpful input,
Brian

So should I just use my old one? It's right at a 1/2 inch.
8$? Where are you buying it? I could only find one at mazdatrix and it was 30 plus shipping, which means about $40 the way they charge.

I wouldn't worry about seeing 1/2". As I said, I've never replaced one...I'm sure those experts that do $6000 engine rebuilds will now come in here and tell me how wrong I am though.
Ok I am going to reuse my chain. I think your right Aaron about it being in spec. Like I said, my engine only had 80,000 miles on it. How could it be bad if these engines can go for another 80,000? But if it does go bad I am expecting you to come over and help me change it!
I was always surprised that there was no tensioner assembly on the chain... its very possible that mazda tested one and decided that it wasn't needed. I've seen a few OP drive systems while working at Borg-Warner that have no tensioner, so it seems reasonable.

How about a $1200 rebuild? If you buy the Atkins rebuild kit they will send you a new one, do you have to replace it no, but some people are **** about their engines. Some aren't, I would personally replace it.
