oil pressure gauge fubar?

Rebuild finally started...

The oil pressure gauge is not registering a reading though. There's oil in the filter so I imagine that there is enough pressure going through the system. I jumpered the oil pressure connector and grounded it out to the chassis with no result. the 7.5 amp meter fuse is good too.

Am I missing anything? Is it safe to run my engine?

grounding the wire should peg the gauge to 100+, check the wire to make sure there is no breaks in the wire anywhere, you may have to remove the cluster and test the gauge by grounding it at the instrument cluster.

as i sad earlier the engine would have siezed by now if i screwed up so it should have fine oil pressure but better safe than sorry and test the gauge first to see what it is putting out.

I'll give same advice everyone gave me... put in an aftermarket mechanical guage.

redundant gauges are kind of over the top, i hate it. the stock gauges are accurate enough for most things unless you are going very high performance in which case it would be better to just get rid of the stock cluster and fab one up.

Actually I found the stock gauge read quite differently to the quality mechanical gauge I installed. I'd recommend aftermarket.

Agreed. My 87 GXL was ALL over the place on the stock guage. My 86 GXL sits at 65 constantly. No matter what. I'll be putting a guage on that soon also.

so, either a) i tear into the dash and check the wire and ground it out there or b) i put in a mechanical gauge? both seem rather time consuming . . . . well i'll give it a look see. other than that the car is ready to go, just gotta set timing, idle, and adjust the throttle cable. thanks everyone , also i'm not so lucky with searching so i'll try to find sometihng on getting into the guage cluster but if anyone finds anything let me know where. wish me luck . . . . .

getting into the gauge cluster is easy. installing an aftermarket gauge is easier IMO...

ok, picked up an auto meter oil pressure guage. i'll throw that in tonight. also, who has started a fresh rebuild? i ran mine for about ten minutes the other night, before my 90degree coolant hose came off, and i smoked almost as bad as when i blew the coolant seal for the full 10 minutes, I know that the coolant stuck in the exhaust needs to burn off but really now, how long could it take?

oh yeah, the auto meter guage is mechanical, i don't like the idea of having electical issues with my guages.
