oil pressure gauge

The oil pressure sender wire in my '89 GTU shorted to ground. Guess the gauge
burned up. First it pegged high then pegged low. Before I start on an expedition to the junk yard can someone tell me if the gauges are independently replaceable??? Do they plug in or soldered in. Since this is my daily driver for right now I'm going to put a resistor inline with the sensor wire to switched 12 v. and put a voltmeter across it . Don't like driving around without an oil pressure gauge !!!!

must have not had the condensor hooked up as well.

the gauge just screws into the gauge assembly. No plugs, no soldering.

Even if you short the signal wire, it should still work fine.
Are you using a new sensor?
Else, follow Icemark's advice about the loose capacitor.

The only thing I did was replace the connector on the sensor wire since the old one was getting pretty corroded. Unfortunatly, I didn't pull on the crimp to make sure it was tight and it came loose and shorted somewhere. When I crimped another one on and hooked it up the gauge did not move when I turned the key on, nor when I started the engine. Figure the coil in the meter burned out. Isn't the capacitor just to smooth out short duration variations of sensor output????

The only way you can kill the gauge is to shove +12VDC or some other higher voltage into it.
Leaving it disconnected or grounding it should not kill it.

I appreciate the input, but fact is the gauge isn't working. I found a guy in Indiana parting out an FC chassis and he said he would sell the gauge at a very reasonable price. Can I replace it without taking the entire instrument cluster completely out of the dash?

Mine did the same after I swapped in my TII. I just left it dead and got a good aftermarket gauge.

The gauge is replaceable, but does require the cluster to be removed.
