Oil Leak...?

There is some built up oil around the drivers side of the engine bay, near the oil filter. I am wondering if I could wash it away with water to see if it is still leaking oil or where the problem is coming from.

What is the proper way to clean the area and see where the leak comes from?

It is most likely the two o-rings under the oil filter pedestal, they get flattened out and brittle with heat and age.

alright so I'll change those today. How should I clean the engine in that spot? It would really require a hose b/c its difficult to fit my hand down there.

I'd just like to get it clean to know if I fixed the problem.
