oil filter pedestal...HELP!!

Hi Yall!! My local mazda dealer gave me a part number for the 2 O-rings that are supposed to sit underneath the oil filter pedestal, but there is one freaky problem...the ones i showed them from my car('90 n/a vert with 43k original miles) anyways the one si showed them were flat like faucet washers and seemed like a harder material than a regular O-ring. they said i had to special order the part because they didnt have anything to substitute for it. soo i called my sister and had her pick up the parts at another dealer...problem is that she brought me back some regular looking O-rings and told me the guy at the dealer she went to said its the correct part.
Is the O-ring/flat washer for the oil filter pedestal supposed to be a regular O-ring? was my original just flattened out because it was 10+ years old? will the new O-ring melt and give me more problems? does anyone here have good advice on this subject? thanks in advance.

Fred

They are flat an hard because they have been compressed and are 12 years + old. What you have in your hand (old) is the reason you need the new ones. Just install the new ones with a bit of Hylomar and life will be good.

eah, i got a o-ring assortment pack from harbor freight, has like 400 o-rings, cost me 3.99. and they have the o-rings in it. you should go to harbor friend and get a pack, it will probally be less than getting them from the dealer

Yep, flat and hard because they are old. They all get that way.

The replacements are soft and round.

I agree, I just used normal O-rings in mine, size them up right, and never a leak. They are not any type of special O-ring.

That's not half as bad as my local dealership.... They couldn't even find them. I had to order them from mazdatrix at 3.50 a pop.

Hehe, friendly warning about that, I went to the hardware store and got the wrong ones. My dad was pretty pissed when i leaked about 6 quarts of nice sticky 20w50 all over his driveway.

Even with the gaskets from mazdatrix it's still leaking a little, I'm going to retourqe some stuff but those nuts are a PITA to get to when the engine is in the car.

With all due respect, how do you know they need to be replaced if you do not know where they go?

Now for the location - the oil filter attaches to the oil pedistal. The oil pedistal is held on to the rear housing with two 10MM nuts. To replace, remove the oil filter and discard, remove the two nuts and remove the pedistal. You can then replace the orings. Remember - NEVER reuse standard orings that have made contact with oil, EVER.

upgrade to silicone hoses, or metal re-inforced piping. Ive never blown a hose of any kind on my RX7.

Not to hijack this thread anymore then it already has been... Mazdaformance tends to not have all the things they say they do, I ordered some wind sheild trim (left/right) and it never came through.

Sorry.... Back to oil pedestals!

What's the part number for those o-rings? Or what size? I've been trying to get them from the local mazda dealership but we can't seem to find the part number.. just the d-code. If you could tell me the part number or the size..
