Question Oil

I have a S5 TII and my oil level is low right now can I just add oil in or do I have to drain the old oil out first. The reason I ask is because the last oil change they used moblie 1 oil and now this time im going to use and stick with Castrol GTX 20/50.Would it be a bad idea to just add oil or should I get the pan drained and then change oil?

I would not mix brands. I would drain/flush the system first.

You can add oil as long as it is the same weight.

For an oil change? Fill it till it's full according to the dipstick. About 4.5 if I remember correctly, but I normally don't measure.

There has been chatter on this forum about Mazda changing oil filter vendors. I went to get a Mazda OEM and it is now a larger can. They had a few of the small cans in stock but said they now recommend the larger one. Since there has been several discussions that Fram now provide Mazda with its filters I decided to go with the K&N. A lot more expensive but fear that the can size change suggests a vendor change and that the touted quality of the Mazda OEM may be history.

Anyone know for certain if Mazda has slected another manufacturer?

you need to show me a pic of this 'new' oe filter for me to believe Mazda changed supplier.

The ones I have are from Mazda Europe, Mahle is the manufacturer I believe. Very well made filter.

Do not have pic. However held the two in my hand and bought but not yet returned the larger. And yes it says Motoren Parts Center(Europe) as does the one installed late last fall in my GXL. I compared the two. The new one is about 3/4 of an inch taller. Shure looks like a change to me.

you probably got the 626 filter (about 3/4" longer than the standard rotary/4 cyl filter), which is exactly the one i'm using.

and i'm pretty certain it is NOT a Fram filter. my local dealership had a filter (the same type i bought) cut open on display, and it is made of very high quality parts, most notably the composite fiber filter element.

DO NOT MIX BRANDS OF OIL!!! DONT DO IT... Even if they are the same weight. They may have the same weight they are made different and have a different pattern when you look at it in a microscope. If you wanna spend some money get the mobile 1 synthetic oil. It is like $10 a quart but it friggin rox! K&N oil filters are really nice and have kept my oil looking good for almost 3,000 miles (time for my next oil change...) Despite rumors you cannot run synthetic oil really long like alot of people think unless you have a filter that filters down to 1 micron (or whatever). If you have any other questions about oil just ask...
