offers to race
Hey,
I've had my Rx-7 since may. It's a 1989 GTU (non-turbo) automatic. ppl have offered to race me. Eagle talons (turbo), camaros, even the heap of **** honda's. I really don't know much about a rotary engine. My car isn't in that bad shape - i replaced a bunch of **** on it that was about to die out. Ex - Thermostat housing, Master cylinder, plugs & wires.... the basic ****. The most expensive thing i put in was the thermostat housing - that was almost $500 - What i want to know is.... What can i do next - to make my car faster? I wan't to be able to shut my friends damn mouth. He's the *** with the camaro. it's a 1979 - only has a straight 6 engine. I know i want NOS but i will hafto wait because without doing anything to the engine - it'll fall apart. I Just want to know what i should buy next to add to the car to make it faster. If u have any suggestions - please tell me. If u know any online sites that carry the parts - please give me the address. Thank-you in advance.

You should be able to beat his Camero and just about any honda now.
Try these. There are many more but this is a few of the bigger sites.

First, get an exhaust. A Racing Beat or Bonez downpipe (forget headers unless you want to get made fun of for sounding like a weedwhacker), a high-flow cat, and Rotary Performance cat-back will not break the bank and will be not-too-loud but with good gains.
Second, get an intake. A K&N filter will clamp right on. Get one.
Third, lighten the car. Get a can of fix-a-flat and ditch the jack and spare and associated nonsense. Have you weighed yourself lately? :p

LOL - thanx for the help brandon. I'll make sure i get out and jog to lose some of the 175lbs i have now - lol.
I was thinking of getting the BLITZ LM Core Filter Kit - http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm - schroll down and you'll see the one i want.
I'll look into the NOS too - although my parents aren't too happy about it
As for the exhaust - i wanted the Monza Exhaust system. I saw it in the 2001 spring edition of the Victoria British LTD magazine. It's specially for the RX-7. The exhaust increases HP by 5 and increases gas mileage by 10% (if engine is tuned perfectly) - If u know a better exhaust system - let me know - this one costs $269.95

if you are up to the task, convert it to manual. automatics are slugs.
if that vickie british exhaust you are talking about it the pacesetter kit, i would warn against it. everyone i know that has ordered it had HUGE fitment problems. you are better off just going to your local exhaust shop and getting a setup made for you. maybe with glass-packs and turbo-style mufflers. if you can find a shady shop that will put in a straight-pipe where the cats are, that will be good for you if you can rig the 6-ports to open. i forget how it works on your year. isnt it from the air pump? in that case, removing the cats should be ok.

Oh, and converting to a 5-speed is more pain that it's worth. If you want real speed, though, you'll have to get one. Sad to say, but the best way to do a 5-speed conversion is to convert the whole car, too...

You can get the RB header & presilencer setup for around $400. That does alot more for you than a cat-back. Thats setup should bolt right up to your existing cat-back too. Then later just buy 2 mufflers and take it to a shop & have them put them on. You can have them put a cat the same size as your presilencer on & then you can just swap them back and forth for emmissions testing. And like they said, don't spend that money on a blitz intake. Just go to the local race shop and buy one for like $40. You will need the adaptor too.
Hey guys can you change the gears in an auto to the ones in the manual? Like put some 4:13 in there.

DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT! I was afraid of having to convert! I'll see - but idunno. thanx though.
My friend is taking his straight 6 out of his camaro and putting in a v8 350 in. He wants me to put the 6 into my car but i don't think it's a good idea. Plus i heard that once the rotary is tuned right - NOS is better than in any other engine.

Best performance mod for a automatic N/A is to get it changed to a 5 speed. It is pretty cheap if you can find a parts car and will give a very noticable gain and more control over the engine. I did this to mine and haven't had any problems. Try searching for auto to manual conversion or something along those lines and im sure you will find a parts list and estimated cost. good luck.

the swap probably isn't worth it, cause in the end it's still an N/A if you want to go fast buy a Turbo II, if all you want to do is drag your friends, go buy a old v8 car.

A 1979 Straight 6 engine is probably putting out less HP than your rotary. I could be wring though.
