An F1 car is not a sports car. It's a kart.

Since I've owned an n/a FC, a TII FC and now an FD, I can say that the most fun car out of all of them was the n/a. My turbo cars weren't as fun because the search for more horsepower started with more forced induction. The n/a was a real challenge because I had to do all the little things to find HP.

Prior to being run off the road and rolling to its death (always wear your seat belt), my '96 V6 Mustang was never the fastest car. It was not a sports car (any body hear the term Pony car). However, comparing your heavily mod'ed RX7's to stock pony cars is insane. I read, and saw dyno's, of a v6 stang with 1000hp. I gaurentee that it is a very quick car. My N/A rex is definately a sports car in the modern vernacular. Hopefully I keep it on all four long enough to mod it. Never say never. The moment you say that no car of such and such a type will never beat me, you'll line up next to Peterbilt running 3sec 1/4's. Yes, I'm exagerating, but now that I've said it, what a project that would be!

One of the fastest cars in the Ontario Regional autocross series pulls *63* hp at the wheels-86 CRX). The other two fast guys pull no more than 130 at the wheels - a Miata and a (shudder) Civic. These guys have some mad suspension mods done to them. I'm working on the suspension now.

HP is not everything. The fast cars are the ones that can handle with the right driver.

*ANY* RX-7 meets that spec.

The NA is a real sportcar.

Is the MG-A a sports car?

My 91 vert is very much like my old 61 MG.

It is sitting in the carport with electrical problems.

And who said only Lucas could make crapie electrical components...and only 30 years to learn.

Hmmmm... I have to say the NA is a sporty car. The GTUs may give it a run for sports car status though. Anyone who thinks the stock vert is a sports car needs to drive some more cars. Its just a GT car for cruising.

I do have to say that the TII is a sports car in every sense of the phrase.

Hmmm, is my convertible 7 a sports car?

A vehicle equipped w/ a turbocharger does not mean it is a sports car.

A Ferrari is a sports car and it does not have a turbocharger (most models anyway). Most of their cars are N/A.

If a requirement to be called a sports car is a turbocharger, then I guess we should call vehicles, like a lot of diesels trucks, sports trucks.

A sports car is traditionally but not limited to

1) a 2 seater (although auto manufacturers have been pushing it to a 4 seater for more marketability)
2) that handles rather aggressively
3) has a somewhat low profile.
4) a zippy engine that can pull quicker 0-60 times than your average compact car.

Although these are not necessarily the exact rules for a sports car, it seems to be the reoccuring theme. So, in response to the main question, the non-turbo RX-7s are sports cars. (Look at the 240sx as an example, the US version was still considered a sports car).

When I was the age of most of you folks, sportscars were:

Porsche
Jag
Corvette
Triumph
MG
Austin Healey
The occasional GT 2000
& other assorted 2 seat imports - mostly European, & mostly slow & underpowered, but handled like crazy.
HP was a bonus, but not required.

Drag racing & other go fast in a straight line thinking is NOT part of the definition of a sportscar.

ALL RX-7's are sportscars in my book.

Did you ever drive a MG-TC, MG-A, Austin Healy 3000, Jag 140, '61 Vet with 2 4-barrels and a Duntoff cam or an Alpine Tiger? A turbo does not a "sports car" make.

Did you ever spend the money set aside for side curtains on your girl friend?

Did you ever go to a "sports car" race, Watkins Glenn, Dunkirk, Lime Rock, Riverside, or Sears Point?

Did you ever enter a "sports car" rally?

Have you ever entered a gymcana or an autocross?

You need to read John Matras' -Sports Car Color History- MAZDA RX7. Read about the incredible engineering that went into developing the RX7 sports car.

Then talk to us about "sports cars"!

When only 75 of you have looked at

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=101031

I wonder about the knowledge base of the forum to define "sports car".

Re: Drive more cars?

I don't mean to get anyone's panties in a wad over the definition of sports car. My posts are more accurately defined as relative to "High Performance Sports Car."

Yes I have driven plenty of antique underpowered vehicles :-p
I spent a summer with my best friend rebuilding an Austin Healy MKIV (SU carbs suck!). I have driven a few XK Jags and antique Vettes. I will admit that I haven't driven and Sunbeam/Talbot cars.

I also definitley don't believe that a turbo makes a car a sports car. It is plainly in my signature that I drive a highly modded Turbo II Convertible and my daily driver '95 Vette (which doesn't have a turbo).

And on the Matra's book, I have read it and it sits on my bookshelf with the two Yamaguchi/Dinkel books and Mike Ancas' Rx-7 Perf Handbook.

The rx-7 does have an interesting history, but I fear that if one wrote a book about the Porsche 944 that the rx-7 was built to compete with, and targeted its sale at 944 enthusiasts it would be very similar in its emphasis on the car's engineering.

In my personal...PERSONAL (ie. individual) opinion (possibly barring the Vert and GTUs) NA's are like the non-turbo supra's, 3000 GT SL's, and v6 F body cars of the world. I have owned/own NA's, Turbo II's, and an NA Convertible that I converted to a Turbo II by swapping the drivetrains.

That is the point. Sports car are "sporty".
Underpowered cars can be fun to drive....for hours on the right kind of roads, not just for 15 seconds :-p.
Apples and oranges.
There was a great program on sports cars on the Discovery Channel...only they missed the RX7. Too little time, too many commercials.

by my definition it is a pure sports car front engine rear drive 50/50 weight, good power to weight ratio, fun to drive. What isn't pure sports car about any rx7

The GT races at Watkins Glen are probably the sickest things i have ever seen. Those cars ****** fly, and they handle like God is steering. I go there every year for Bud at the Glen, but I really dont give a **** about NASCAR, I just love the GT races. I live about 20 minutes away from the Glen.

Yes it is. Not the fastest out the box...but still faster than most hondas!
