nomenclature for pilot, front cover, seals

hey guys, i'm going to replace my pilot bearing, seal and T/O bearing this weakend. i figure since its out i might as well change the front cover also.

MY problem is that, the parts store does sell a "front cover" or a "pilot bearing seal". they do sell rear engine seal (probaly the pilot seal) and a front input shaft seal. i just want to make sure i'm buying the right parts before i do the job. is the front cover also known as the input shaft seal w/sleeve?? kinda confusing the guys at the parts center. thanks for your help guys.

i've been to mazdatrix many times for reference and parts buying, but their names for parts are different from the parts store.

i also need these parts by fri so i can start working. my big problem is the front cover i need to know if that is also named the "input shaft seal w/sleeve". the price seems right, but i dont want to buy the wrong part. also, does the fron cover come with a seal, or is it a seal all by itself??? thanks

The rear engine seal at the parts store is going to be your output seal, not the pilot bearing seal. Your pilot bearing seal will probably only be avaliable through a dealer (it's only about $2.50). For the front cover gasket and front eccentric shaft seal you can buy them at atkins or mazdatrix. The front cover gasket isn't really necessary if you use high temp RTV.

If your confused as to what you're buying, I bet your parts store has a diagram of the parts your looking to buy on the computer. Or, bring in your old seals and compare.

Oh, I have heard that autozone, napa ect. pilot bearings are junk. I have no personal experience but I would buy oem for things like that.

Hope this helps,

Brian

i think it's my fault for not explaining that the front cover i'm trying to replace is for the tranny and not the motor itself.

i've found both the pilot bearing and seal, now my only dillema is the tranny front cover. i need to know if that is what's referred to as "input shaft seal w/sleeve" oh yes, and this is a TII tranny.

as far as i know the N/A tranny come with a gasket and seal, but the TII dont. not sure why that is, but i'm wondering if the front cover for the tranny is a seal itself or if i need buy a gasket for it. thanks again, and sorry about the confusion

Imput Shaft Bearing and seal? If my memory serves me then there should be only 3 seals on the T2 trans.

this is the peice that i'm refering to. this is labeled as the "front cover" in the haynes/chilton and the FSM. searching schuks/kragen... the "input shaft seal w/sleeve" is what resembles the front cover the most. this is also found in the Transmission sectioin and NOT the engine section.

this is the peice that i'm trying to purchase from a parts store. according to mazdatrix there is no gasket, so i'm wondering...
1. is this also known as the input shaft seal w/sleeve
2. is this a seal in itself or will i need to make/purchase one seperately

i really appreciate the feedback, and i'm trying to clear this up for anyone in the future that might have this problem. thanks again
