no spring to shifter

When I push the shifter toward the right and let go, it snaps back to the N position, when I try it to the left and let go it just stays there.

The trans shifts good but its annoying, is this a common prob with FC's?

How do I fix it?

You can order a new spring set from Mazdatrix, but I would just pull up the boots first and try to lube up the area.

I went as far as removing the shifter lever and noticed about an inch of gear oil under it, is this normal?

Where exactly are the springs located and can you install them from the cockpit or will the trans have to come out?

Thanks

My shifter has the same problem. It hasn't caused any major issues, it's just annoying like you said. Where you at in Detroit?

Redford.

So under all that gear oil is where i'll find the springs? I hope that's the problem because it seems simple enough to do.

By the way, the oil should be in there right?

Ya,the oil is Ok to be there..Actually they show the Dude putting it in On the Mazdatrix website when they do a short shifter install. It's kind of funny though, because you can Put Diff Fluid in there,BUT you can't Fill the transmission that way...it doesn't run to the Bottom of the Trans..anyhow,Ya,Shifter spring install will involve taking the Rear Tail piece Off the Car/Transmission..so NO,it's not Easy.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I've got a similar problem and can't find a writeup. My shifter has no spring at all. I don't know if it is broken or non-existant, but I bought a weird lookin spring that is supposed to work. Does anyone know how to install this? If some idiot simply took my spring out I wouldn't know where to install it. So it would be appreciated if anyone has any ideas on this since the FSM leaves me scratching my head.

Did you even look at that pic? Not your usual spring. Besides what I'm saying is I don't know where it goes. It's like if I gave you a pintle spring from a keihin carburetor and told you to take apart a carb and put the spring in there. Not so easy if you don't know where it goes yes?

i was half kidding. but in all seriousness it's pretty easy to see how it should operate, just figuring out where it goes is the fun part

try and find the FSM transmission section, should tell you in there

No worries. What Im sayin is that spring isn't your typical coil affair. And I checked the FSM; while it does mention the spring the diagram was shoddy and it didn't mention or show where anything went specifically. Basically I didn't see a spring in the diagram that looked like the one I have. I think I'm gonna just take the thing apart and hope it's self explanatory.
