No idle after routine maintanence

88 VERT.

So over the weekend I changed the oil, flushed the radiator, and replaced the brake pads. When I put everything back together, it would start fine and rev to ~2k. Then when trying to drop to idle, it would just stall out. If I keep on the gas, it will run fine above ~1k. Below that it sputters and will die unless I give it more gas.

Prior to this, it ran perfect. Idle was rock solid at 750. No problems other than annoying the oil leak at the filter mount.

I've searched the forum and found some useful info. I'll be checking the AFM, BAC, vacuum lines, etc tonight. Any other things to check? I'm pretty sure there's still air in the coolant system - could this be causing the problem?

What about your spark plugs and coils? Check your ignition.

Plugs and coils were fine Friday. I've never had any trouble out of my 7 til now.

One more thing...

The tach went dead after I started it once. It read ~2k and then dropped to 0 with the engine running. What would cause an intermittent tach failure?

What about your alternator? If you have a voltage meter what does it read?

check for about 13v (car running) or about 10v (not running, but cranking) on the T1 and T2 coil terminals (each to ground) under the plastic covers...if the trailing pack goes to crap, you won't get a tach signal...

Problem solved. Air hose on the BAC was disconnected. Plug it up and she ran fine. I'm an idiot.

Still trying to purge all the air out of the coolant though. And will definitely check out the coils.

Yeah I have to do this too. I think on the 89-91s you just leave the coolant neck open until it starts to overflow slightly right ?

88 not 89-91 but it sounds like the same setup.

After driving to work this morning there was steam coming out of the radiator cap. Not lots but enough for me to notice with the hood down. The temp did not raise higher than normal though.

Why's it steaming? Is this purging air from the system?
