No fuild in Power steering rack. Ques?

Is it true that a P/S rack can lock up if there is no fluid running through it?

I removed my P/s unit, but left the lines hanging. Im guessig there's no fluid left in the rack since ive been driving around like this for a half a yr. but it seens ok, steering is smooth, no drag or anything.

Should i find someway to get fuild back into the rack and close off the lines? or can i leave them as is?

thanks.

I have not heard of one single person having their rack lock. Just rumors that have had no actual facts to support them I took the lines off the rack and put new bolts in the holes.

That's exactly what I did. pulled the lines and plugged them with bolts. Some people loop lines together so that it pushes fluid through it.

So it's ok w/o fluid.. that's good to here. also did you guys just use metric bolts to plug up the lines?

thanks.

Gen2, you owe It to yourself to cap off the lines accordingly. They should not have been left "dangling" at all. You may have contaminated the rack Itself, which In turn, may cause problems down the road.

Yes. I believe they were m12x1.25 or 1.5 bolts. Just make sure you drain the fluid from the rack before you plug the holes permanately. Air compresses easier than fluid.

I believe fluid can not compress. Isn't that how hydraulics work?

I would recommend filling the fluid in the rack to about 1/2 full and capping the system closed. This will lubricate the system, avoid creating hydraulic compression, give room for heat expansion and prevent moisture from rotting the unit from the inside.

No mechanical part is made to work without some lubrication.
