no compression in rear rotor

I bought a 1990 rx7 TII with 155,000 on it and a gutted cat from rx7world.com. It ran fine except it smoked when I went over 4000 RPMs. Today I was driving and the car shut off on me. I had a hard time getting it started again, but once I got it started it ran hard, REALLY hard. So hard it shook the whole car. I took off the oil cap and it smelled like fuel. I also noticed there is a thick white liquid in the oil reserve.I checked the engine compression and there is none in the rear.

I called the guy back from rx7world.com and he told me that I must have reved the engine too high and since it has a gutted cat I blew the engine. Even if i redlined the engine, which I didn't, what would be the point of getting a rx7 if you cant redline it? Thats part of the attraction. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice? I'm pissed. I love rx7's and this is my first one. It took me years to finally get one and now it's broke. Did I get taken or is this my fault?

From what I've learned on this forum is that an RX7 with that many miles on it is a ticking time bomb..could pop at any moment. If it had been very well taken care of (oil changes at 3k miles religously) you could possibly get 200K before it happens. But, apex seals can go at any time with that much wear. Did you get a compression test before you bought it? That can give you a good indication of how much life is left on the seals...sorry

ONe thing you'll learn (or already have) is that ANY rotary can drop seals at ANY time for NO real reason. It's just the way it is with these cars/engines. IT is in no way the seller's fault, nor is there a good way (compression tests give you an IDEA of an engine's health, not a guarantee) of knowing how long an engine has left in life.

If gutted cats had any negative impact on rotary engine health, most of us would be driving Probes by now. What you were told was nonsense.

A gutted cat on an otherwise stock t2 can raise boost, and on a tired stock engine that is not a good thing.

Man I do feel your pain . I had my first rx-7 (sig) and it popped a rotor a month after I had it. I cryed so much (not really) but it was a sad sad thing. I kept saying to myself its not dead, its not dead. But in the back of my mind I knew it. I just got back up started saving and just plan to buy a 7 from someone who rebuilt it or has all the records on the car and the car having less then 100k on it. Sorry to hear about your lose but I have been through the same thing. 500 posts =)

I didn't know that. I withdraw the "nonsense" remark then.

Anytime you make the engine more efficient by increasing airflow in/out (intake and exhaust mods) you make the turbo more efficient, which increases boost. The engine and turbo feed off each other...

We all know that increasing boost on an old engine with no fuel mods is a bad idea.

Thanks for your responses. I was hoping it was something else but I guess I just have to accept it. This really sucks.

No, all the turbo guys know. The NA guys have to wait for threads like this one to find out about it.
