We need some more info, wet or dry? Size of the shot you're using? Where is the fogger located? Etc.

It's very likely that the stock fuel pump isn't flowing enough fuel for the injectors and the wet fogger, which could explain why it's running lean. It's always a good idea to upgrade the pump. With a 40 shot, you should be alright, I've personally ran a 75 on a stock motor with an upgraded pump and no detonation.

Retarding would help prevent detonation, but I think a larger fuel pump is definatly in order. Either a FD pump, Walbro, Cosmo, who knows, anything will be better.

Timing would be fine set at stock, fuel pump should be ok, but I would still change it.

What are your jet sizes? What is your fuel pressure? What is your nitrous pressure? Don't run the system again until you can answer these questions?

Yeah I agree...you are playing with fire man. What kind of kit do you have? I had a 75hp Wet shot from ZEX on my car and it worked great. Zex is a kit that I would highly recommend everyone due to its safeness and ease of installation and operation. The smartbox provided in the kit will sense if your mix is to lean and if so it will stop spraying...to make my kit 100% safe I installed a Microswitch on the TB so that I would not be spraying in between shifts. And if I am not mistaking anything 75hp shot and below and the stock timing maps should be fine...but yeah I would certainly upgrade fuel pumps.
