newbee here.

I just bought a 1988 black convertable a few months ago that has only 38 k miles on it. I would like to keep it pretty much stock, except I would like to improve the handling and get rid of the rear steering. also I have a exhaust leak around the catalitic converters. Is there a cat converter that I could replace all the stock ones with that would still operate my 5th and 6th ports? and how many of you have installed the rear steering eliminater bushings. Thanks.

MI Rx-7 conv,

Check the FAQ in the beginning of this section to familiarize yourself with these cars. If you still have the stock exhaust on there, going with a nice aftermarket Racing Beat setup will make a DRASTIC DIFFERENCE in revving, power, & fuel economy.

Here's the general reliability + power mods:
- Full Tuneup, Adjust TPS, Fuel Filter
- Replace 3 catalytic converters with parital headers (bypass 1st two cats), replace primary cat. I like Magnaflow, but many prefer the Bonez catalytic converter setup.

For handling, you need to replace struts, bushings, DTSS eliminator bushing, Swabar end link bushings, replace subframe end links.

Also check/replace worn wheelbearings, repack wheel & strut top bearings with new greese.

I have the full Racing Beat exhaust & suspension, and it makes a world of difference. For now, just replace the stock setup with new bushings, struts, & exhaust/cats.

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you're doing your homework.

Wow - 38K! nice find..

My only addition to the above: If you have to work with the interior plastic, be very gentile. That old plastic is like glass.

I have a copy of the Factory Service Manuals on-line at the link in my sig.
Download & print whatever you need.

If there was a job opening for an archives writer, he would be the first employee. Good stuff
