Newb...
Hey guys, I didn't see an introduction section around anywhere, so I just thought I'd say what's up here. I'm new to the whole Rotary scene and I just picked up an 86 GXL. The Auto tranny is shot so that's first on my list to do, I've done some other reading around and learned a lot already, but mostly I just want to know (becaues I can't find it anywhere)...
What type of gas does this car take???? lol... It didn't come with an owners manual, and I'm working on getting one. Also wanted to know, If I'm doing a Auto to Manual Tranny swap, Do I need the ECU out of the Manual Donor?
Thanks for the help in advance. I'm looking forward to all this car has to offer, and I'm very excited to finally have one!

regular gasoline. swapping auto to manual is alittle more than just swapping parts, you'll need to have mounts fabricated for it, along with a manual crossmember i believe, someone else will correct me if i'm wrong. also peddle assemblies & clutch master cylinder.
unless you've already got alot of money invested in it, i'd say sell it and buy a manual 7 just to save all the headaches and loss of money, and hair

Rotaries are great fun, but not so much the autos. Sell the auto and find a good 86-91 with an manual transmission. N/A's are good learner cars for the RX7 and also very reliable daily drivers (like mine is). The turbos are a lot quicker but also higher maintenance. Either way you're signing up to a 20+ year old car, so be prepared to spend some money.

And welcome to the woderful world of rotaries
Can I ask why you traded your supra for the 7? Did you get your *** handed to you by a 7 or something? hehe
#7
No I've just always liked FC's and I had an opportunity to pick one up for a great deal. The Supra had a BHG and I got fired from my job about a month ago. So with no money, I couldn't do anything to the Supra, which had been my DD for about a year. I still plan on building up a wicked Supra sometime in the future though. Those cars are my first true love...
The way it looks now, the tranny may not be as bad off as I thought... I'll probably just fix whatever it is that's wrong and just make it a nice DD.
Something that came up today though, the Temp gauge never comes off the peg, and I went to switch out the sensor today thinking that was the problem. But the sensor I got from Advance and the one that's in the car are two completely different ones...
Did someone try to do their own thing and mess it up? Or is Advance giving me the wrong one? The threads aren't even the right size... We tried a couple different years, but they were all the same part number...
I also have a really sucky Idle, and when I first step on the gas, the motor will almost die, and then fire up... I immediately thought TPS, but when I called the Mazda Stealership, they said my car doesn't have one?

+1 to what others said.
All 2nd gen RX-7's have a TPS.
Temp gauge should read 1/8-1/4 most of the time. That's normal.
Price out, etc. your options before you do anything. There are buyer's guides in the FAQ if you want to get a different RX-7.
FAQ, forum search, FSM (download links in FAQ) and Haynes manual chapter 1 are all handy resources for any info you need.

My car was originally an automatic- 1987 gxl na

Can't see the sig. I haven't posted enough.
I told the guy, "Uhm... I looking at the TPS right now..." and he literally said "Well we don't have any record of that car ever having one." I was like... Oh... Really...
I think I'm just gonna keep mine Auto. I don't wanna blow a lotta money on it at this point, so maybe later on. We'll see what happens...
Anyone know about that headlight thing??? Or the Wheels thing? Or the coolant thing? lol... The temp. gauge never gets a signal. It doesn't move at all.

I finally got a hold of someone with a head on his shoulders today at the Mazda dealership...
Is there anywhere I can get a TPS for ANYTHING less than $300???? I paid 75 for the one for my Supra and my dad paid like 50 for the one in his GTI... Why are ours so friggin expensive???
Also, I rigged up the two LED test light thing today to check my codes... I have no codes... How is that possible? The car has been sitting for 3 years. All you do is hook up the three spades to the three connections and turn the key to "On" right? Should I start the car? I just find it so hard to believe I have NO codes...
I also went to two other parts stores today to see what they have for Coolant Temp. Sensors... They were all the same as the one at Advance... What's up with that?

It's so refreshing to have a new member who doesn't type LyKE madtyte DoRIfto11!!1 and actually searches something.
Welcome to rotary power. You're learning very quickly that most auto parts stores have zilch for our cars and that parts are expensive from the stealership. Your best bet would be to peruse the 2nd Gen classifieds section. You're bound to find something you'll need and if you have a question on a seller; people will give you a thumbs up/down in no time.
TPS/Coolant temp sensor are regular sales, you should be good.

The TPS is adjustable. Search "how to adjust TPS" or something.
To see what wheels fit, go to tirerack.com, pick the car, pick a wheel, then look at bolt pattern. Look at wheel offset too. Then do the same for the car you're comparing to.
Hmmm...what else did you mention...manual ECU for that year is N326.
The coolant sensor pictured on the left with the male spade connector is a temp switch for your fan (auto and TII models only) to kick on. The other one is your coolant temp sensor for the ECU (to adjust fuel). The one you'll find near the heater hose on the rear driver side of the engine (one pin bullet connector) is the temp sender which runs the gauge.
The headlight thing is just someone unplugged the headlight retractor motors at the motor. Then you can adjust the lights up or down and get the sleepy eye look (unplug motor first). I can't believe I just said that.
Oh, and give the person a couple of slaps at the dealer and tell them no pipe in the a** for you! BTW, throttle sensor for 86-88 NA is part number N326-18-911A
Most importantly, see my sig. for the FSM, parts fiche and training manual and you'll learn lots of stuff fast. Read the sticky, archives and common questions at the top of this section.

you should be able to find a tps for 10-20 bux in our classifieds, or just go to the junk yard and get one for 5.
#1 don't go to the stealership unless it's aboslutley 100% neccessary
you just lost your job and then bought an rx7??? ouch not a good combination.
86-88 don't throw codes right???? i thought that was an s5 thing

Thank you very much for the kind words though. AND the help!
I did try adjusting it using the two LED method mentioned in the FSM and the FAQ, and it says it's adjusted correctly... I think it may just be too far gone...

I just think it looks sick with those underlights lit up.
On the FSM it shows a way to check the codes with the Two LED thingy...
