New Pioneer Head Unit: poor reception

I have a 87 T2.
I just installed a new Pioneer DEH-P8500MP head Unit. I don't get AM reception at all and FM is OK.
I hooked up a signal amplifier and still no AM reception.

I have the head unit hooked up to the antenna connection with the male plug.
There is also a female plug I assume goes to the windshield antenna.

Which plug goes to which antenna and which one is for AM?

What should I do to get AM reception?

Thanks
Ed

I think the front one is for AM?...

I asume you wired the rear one up right and it goes up?

Yeah it goes up.
I even tried an aftermarket antenna. No AM reception.

Anyone else have poor AM reception?

The poor reception you are getting is from the antenna not having a ground. Are you using the stock power antenna or has it been replaced with something aftermarket?

Either way, you need to clean the mounting under the fender and re-mount the antenna.

At the same time, double check what you are using for ground on the radio. It should be to a bolt in the car... not to any wire found in the dash. It is common for (shall we say less experienced installers) to use the dash light Red/Black as ground, which will also give you problems.

The two antennae are used for both AM and FM; the stock head unit would use whichever one gave the strongest signal.

For people searching with this problem, I figured it out.

The antenna wire that plugs into the head unit that runs to the back of the car where the antenna actually plugs in was no good.

I hooked the antenna straight up to the deck and it worked. So then I ran a new antenna extension from the head unit to the antenna and now I have perfect reception.
