I've long been fascinated with rotary engines, and I finally went out and got a Red 88 vert 5 speed. All is good except for minor "tinkering" repairs like loose wires, balky antenna, master cylinder, and so on. All is stock and shows little signs of being 'futzed' with, which is really nice, especially on a car this old.

One thing I was really happy about was that I could push out the dents in the front fenders ahead of the wheel openings by just removing the fender liners to get access to the back, and simply applying pressure til they popped out! So now theres just a couple little dimples where there used to be major eyesores.

Now for a few questions:

What are you using to replace the stock CD player? The Pioneer unit skips badly and the right side crackles and cuts out a lot. (The radio and tape work fine).

Does anyone have a spare "port air solenoid valve"? Mine snapped off at the end, and I'm not really sure what it does. I do want to replace it , all the same.

I think I might be a victim of the dreaded leaky pulsation damper. I'm not sure because when idling, there are no signs of leakage. But after a 15 minute drive, I'd smell gas while parking, and theres wet gas below and to the right of the damper. Would the damper leak only happen while driving, or all the time? Following warnings I've read elsewhere, it's not going anywhere til fixed.

Sure am glad this forum is here and look forward to trading info, pics, etc.

The port air solenoid controls the actuation of the ACV. This isnt a major problem if you live in a non-emissions area. Basically, the solenoid switches a vacuum on and off at the ACV and it directs the secondary air to either the "split air" or the "port air".

All these little details are gonna kill me!! I'm not happy unless every little thing is right...weird genetic trait I guess but a serious fault when it comes to a 14 yr. old car.

The DP isn't leaking (there was actually a tiny hole in the fuel line near the rail) but I'm gonna replace the DP anyway, just for extra insurance and a better nights sleep.

Not really, there is a link to the Factory Service Manual. I dont have it here, or I would give it to ya. But its not as hard as you think, to get everything working right.

I would go with a alpine deck (my $119 alpine cd has lasted 4 years). 2nd, Try turning the ignition on and in front of the passenger's strut tower the is a Yellow 2-pin plug (may or may not have a rubber boot on it) run a wire to jump the two pins. That will get the fuel pump to run. Next, watch very carfully you will see a leak starting. (given there is a leak) I thought my pulsation damper was leaking untill I priced them @ www.mazdatrix.com and then I did that pressure test and found a 4" long fuel line going into the fuel rail directly behind the damper leaking. Good luck

Thanks, I have the link bookmarked and bought a copy of the Haynes book.

I've become a fastidious fool when working on this car. I keep ALL my tools on the workbench, and not resting inside the fender areas or on top of the engine. I've already lost a couple little parts to the "Valley of the Damned"- - ie. the area below the intake runners. BTW a cheap Penn Auto grappler wand with the retracting fingers at the end has helped me out like a dozen times already. It really gets into those tight places.

I also no longer assume that a part that I unscrew will simply come off as one piece, and a dropped tool or part will *rarely* land on the floor under the car, but in never-land!
