88 TII just bought low boost??

just got an 88 TII the car seems well taken care of good shape runs fine though 120k miles on it. heres my problem it takes full throttle around 5k rpms to get the stock boost guage up to almost half way i can hardly hear it spooling up. is this the way an 88 is supposed to be im thinkin not but i wanted to get some experienced advice on it and if i should replace the turbo or any thing else may cause this problem.
thanks
dave

Do not trust the factory boost gauge, get an aftermarket one. You don't mention what mods you have, but if the intake system is stock you won't hear a thing. How does it actually drive? You should feel the boost come in at about 3000rpm and pull hard until about 6000rpm where a stock car starts to run out of puff.

Whoa, slow down a bit. If your car is down on boost and performance, it could be blocked cats or another simpler and cheaper problem. Are there any mods on the car?

What gear are you talking about?

Try a 3rd gear Wide open throttle run.

Boost should start to spool 2500-3000 and be full boost untill redline.

If you do not hear the whoosh of the turbos or get thrown back in your seat, its possiable there is a problem

Yeah it kinda sounds to me that there might be something clogged or keeping you flow down. I can hear that whistling noise like a jet turbine from my 87' Turbo II...I was just curious if there's a way to modify the stock waste gate or blow off valve to sound a lil' louder till I can buy a cool one? Just a thought.

Hey, I had a similar problem on my 87 TII. There is a plastic gizmo sticking out of the back of the throttle body that has 2 hoses going to it. If you look at the front of the throttle body, there is a diaphragm toward the driver's side, mounted low. The rod coming out of it holds the second secondary throttle plates closed if there is vacuum on the diaphragm. If you have just run the engine, and the plates do not open when you open up the throttle due to this link holding them shut, you have a defective water thermo switch and/or no water flow to the throttle body. Heck, I just bypassed mine (to do so pull the hose to the bottom nipple on the back of the throttle body (there is a row of 4) and replace with a cap). On my TII, I had mediocre acceleration and 4.5psi boost when this happened (normal boost for my car is 7.5-8 and it pulls really strong, but I have mods!).
Worth checking imho, caps can be had for $2, a new exhaust/intake $800, and you could still have the problem!

get that exhaust system outta there, its big time restrictive. i have the rb full exhaust and it's a good bang for your buck mod. it will make your engine a hell of a lot happier. be prepared for fuel cut, i hated it!!!! by now you should know what im talking about. your gonna need an fcd.

once you have the intake and exhaust and it will sound like music to your ears!

thanks for all the help. i just noticed the one of the screws on top of the stock intake is messed up and causes the one corner to stick up about a 1/4 inch. still didnt pull the cats off and check though.
