new engine suggestions
I have found an 89 turbo II for sale with a blown engine.
The body, paint, and interior are imaculate but the car is in need of an engine. I am considering the following:
1) New engine: Probably the stupidest idea. Anyone have any idea if its still possible to get a new engine from mazda and if so a guess on the price?
2) A rebuilt engine: Where can I get one? How much?
3) A J-SPEC: Rather not go this direction since you never know what you are getting and the waranties are usually ****.
Also, how much am I looking to spend in labor for the install? Does anyone know of a good rotary shop in the New York City area?
If it is possible and reasonable in price, I would love to go with the new engine?
What do you guys think? Any input or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
P.S.
Sorry about any spelling or grammer mistakes, or rambeling on. I've been partying all night and am a bit fucked up right now.

Considering it takes like a day to install it yourself, I say free
I did mine myself w/ very little experience. My best friend just had a new engine put into his Ford Contour. $1,500 for JUST the install labor.

new engine-way too much
rebuild-1000-2000(im guessing)
j-spec-i got mine for 850. i got a 30k mile 3 month warranty with it too.
to me the j-spec motors are the best options. get one from a respectable shop and you got no worries. me and 2 of my friends all got our motors in within a week and they were perfect, some even had upgraded parts on em.

mazda does not offer new engines, you would have to buy all the parts and assemble them. $6k
you can get a rebuild anywhere from $800-$2500
labor to put it in depends on how much other stuff you need, vacuum line, clutch, water hoses, metering lines, gaskets, etc. ($400-$1200
the book time to put a motor in is about 12 hours

How much skill would the labor require? I have good basic mechanical skills, and I am pretty intelligent. Would it be that hard to pull it off with the FSM? I also have the basic tools (wrenches, sockets and what not) besides those and an engine stand and hoist would I need any other special tools? Where is a good place to buy a quality rebuilt engine and any other loose end parts I would need? With the engine out it would be a good time to do the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel too right?

It's not that difficult, just time consuming. Yes, if the engine is out, do all coolant hoses, vacuum lines, clutch, pressure plate, throw out brg., pilot brg. and seal. Chech your driveshaft also for binding/play. If you need to remove the flywheel, that takes some doing. Don't remember the socket size, but the nut's on @ 300 lbs.
Remanufactured engine from Malloy Mazda @ $1800, gasket set @ $80, shipping, each way @ $60. Each way meaning they require a return complete core. There may be a deposit until the core is returned $1000. You'll need to talk to Ray @ Malloy. Comes with oil pan, front cover, water pump, and flywheel.
1 year, 12,000 mile warranty. Not too bad. Check threads for other suppliers. A lot of opinions available. All dependant on what you want as a final product e.g. performance options.
Money mounts up very quickly with these cars.

When I asked about a rebuilt motor at a local Mazda dealer they said there was no warranty if they did not do the installation.
$1700 for the motor
$1500 for installation
I'm sure that they would also find all kinds of other things that need replacement.
"WE can't guarantee the motor unless you put NEW injectors in." Or maybe an OMP. Or?
