New engine...or not

Ok here is the deal.
1988 GXL
My car floods all the time. I did the ATF trick and it got worse.
I put in an AFM switch and that didn't help either.
That is only part of the problem.
Once the car is running it starts to overheat in less than 10 minutes i.e. coolant is shooting out of the overflow and temp gauge is on the rise. Now if I just start driving (50 mph +) the car will cool down to norm operating temp and, I stop losing coolant...(this started after the ATF trick) I put in a new thermostat, new caps, new water pump, different clutch fan (now both freewheel after about ten, or so, spins) None of this takes care of the problem. There is a whole lot of pressure in the upper radiator hose after I shut the car off but the bottom hose is not pressurized. Whats up there?
Aside from all of that I'm pretty sure since the temp has been up above 3/4 on the gauge (alot of times) I will need to replace the engine. I want to put another N/A in the car as the Jspec would require a new transmission, wiring harness, etc.. So right now the car is at a local shop (which I'm very uncomfortable about) and has been sitting there for a month and hasn't been touched. (Not happy about that either)
My 2 questions are as follows:
1. Do you think I can salvage the car (after all the stuff I told you is going on)?????
2. If I need to replace the engine, where is the best place to get a new or really good rebuilt N/A for a very good price?
I appreciate any help I can get on this one.
I am really tired of driving my back up car. 85 Rx7 POS (but atleast it starts and runs...lol)
Thanks.

I do economy rebuilds. These utilize all new seals and gaskets, but reuse decent rotor housings and rotors, adn all teh hard parts of the engine. They are also streetported mildly if desired. Expected life of such engine is 5-8 years depending on treatment and maintenance. They go in the $1200 range, plus assembly(if manifolds/accessories) and installation. FOr those who want a like new, perfect running engine, spend the $2200+ at a high-end rotary shop, these ofers are mainly for the young people who love the rotary but cannot afford such high prices, and need a reliable strong engine to last for a while on a budget. They do require a 4000 mile breakin to run perfectly.

I have an 86-8 13b 6 port streetported on hand right now with 0 miles I need to sell for $1000 plus assembly(as mentioned above). Interested parties contact hypntyz@charter.net

Sounds like the atf treatment may have cleaned some carbon buildup which was preventing the car from burning antifreeze.

Carbon may have been sealing the water gasket.
