New Engine Bay Pics !!!

Well I decided to take some new pics last night. My situation is like this: my department at work is moving to a new building and we are all losing our offices to get cubicals. So as of Monday I will only be able to browse the forun before and after work with maybe a few minutes during lunch. So I decided to get some nice clean pics to show, for my last full blown forum appearence.

Some of you may be saying why does this guy keep changing his intake configuration. Well I am running out of fun stuff to do, so I try to come up with ways to make old things work better. And this new intake set-up is head and shoulders above the rest. There have been a few guys on here before with something similar, but I'm not sure how good thier results were. My results were awesome. This new set-up may not be suitable for daily driving due to rain, but in the sun it sure makes some good power. I felt a large increase in power at anything over 20 mph. The filter is mounted just above the upper half of the front grill; so if you look in from the front you can not see the filter (which may prevent rain damage). And I have had no cooling issues in the past 5 days. I waited till now to mention it due to the possible side effects; and I wanted to test it before you guys went out and tried. It was very easy to do. All you need is a 2" in and 2" out pcv pipe connector, a angled piece of pcv pipe 2" diameter, and an air filter. The tools are simple: a flat head screwdriver and a saw-zaw (sp.?). I just unbolted the radiator and sorta pushed it over a few inches to saw away the hole. Then it's preaty simple after that. I then detailed the engine bay and went for the test drive. Let me tell you; when you start to hear the filter make noise; HOLD ON! It pulls much harder than it did before. I have no idea of horsepower gains but to be this noticable it has to be at least 5-7.

I'll be in-and-out all day today. So if you have any specific questions, you better get them out of the way before 5 p.m.

Oh yeah! I removed my crane-cams HI-6 and am selling it for $75. If anyone wants it let me know. It works but just doesn't seem to do much. I also can sell my old air-box, but it may not fit as well on others cars without the same mods as me. It needs to have some stuff relocated or removed to fit properaly. I'll sell the box for $25. I also have a used bonez filter that has about 10k miles on it, but it sure looks like it has more.

Ok in theory couldn't you get the electric fan that was placed a head of the radiator, reverse it and have it create a vacum around that filter so you were sucking in A LOT of air? Cause damn that would be cool....sorry just got out of Physics class and we are doing a thing on waves and damn that would be cool if you did that ...

The filter is a "Matrix" filter. It is what most of the "H" crowd uses because they are cheap and readily available. I have a buddy who runs a speed shop and he gave me this one for an unbelievable price. Let's just say that most places are ripping us off preaty bad; well, really bad, I should say.

And about the fan up front. I think an additional fan up front could help cool the car better but there is more than enough air coming in the front grill to supply my filter on an NA. If it were a more powerful motor sucking more air then maybe you could see some gain. But this motor now has more than enough air to cool the car and supply the motor with fresh cool breathing air.

It also looks alot cleaner.

The hole was cut with a "saw-zaw" it is a jig-saw type thing that the blade sticks staight out of the end so you can cut in tight areas. A dremel would set you back a few hours maybe even days. The saw-zaw cut through it like butter. I used the area where the AC lines used to go through that way I did not have to cut a starter hole to get the saw going. And the rad is mounted in its stock location; I just moved it to make the hole. But with the hoses attached you can only move it about 2 inches. But that seemed to be enough to get the job done. Sorry I can not get any more pics; I'm at work now and I took off tomarrow to golf (drink!) in a scramble. It may be awhile before I can get any more pics of anything. My new location just won't let me goof-off on the net much.

WHOA! this almost fell off the first page. I didn't go through the trouble of taking these pics for only a 5 hour show.

I like the checker board look of that filter. Very clean looking if I may say so.

The added piece of PVC is about 10 inches long. It adds to the intake length, which reduces flow but the lowered temps and added available air more than makes up for the lengh. On those honda cold intakes they add a few feet of tube and it still makes more power. So a few inches is nothing to worry about.

I'll be having a very similar mods setup in my '91 real soon. Have you ever ran this car at the track? If not, what are some kills or races you've encountered (from a punch or still, doesn't matter)?

I have never been to the track or have I EVER raced anyone. I only drive for the fun of it. All I know is that the car is faster than I need it to be already. One day I'll get some numbers; but for now the butt dyno says it has 5 million horsepower.

Sorry to answer your question in such a way!

No problem. I never ran my '88 at the track, but butt dyno and numerous racing encounters told me it'd run a LOW 15. Well, call me a dumbass broke kid at the time because I blew it up - yes, pulsation dampner. Oh well, I just recently had my GSR totalled out - time to go back to RX7 land. Getting an FC this weekend for a daily beater - plan on doing exactly the same thing you've already done just to drive around town and beat some ricer kids. Should be a fun ride.
