Need To Swap Front Counterweight for an auto To Manual Conversion?
So I went to this experienced local rotary guy, he said I should put in the front counterweight to balance the engine otherwise my motor will be horribly unbalanced. Is it necessary? I searched a lot of swap posts but it is never mentioned.
I also have the list for my swap ready, do I need anything else? if do, please give a head up. thanks everyone!!
(For 86 NA)
-manual pedal assembly
-master, slave cylinders
-clutch kit and flywheel
-manual transmission
-manual transmission cross member
-manual transmission driveshaft
-manual starter

The front counter weight is already balanced for the engine. You need to make sure you get a flywheel matched to your engine, since you said 86 n/a you need a flywheel for a 86-88 rx7. Or a use your auto counter weight to bolt a lightweight flywheel to.
They can be had for around $250-$400.
Make your life easier, and use impact to take the flywheel nut off. The counterweight removal (if you use the stock flywheel) will be ridiculously hard. I used a gear puller, just make sure the nut is on the crank before you pull, or you might end up eating the counterweight. for the pedals, You need the long bolt, nut and sleeves that goes with the 5speed pedals, you cant use the bolt thats already there. ummm what else... [I just finished the swap. so these things are fresh in my mind] Keep the harness from the auto tranny for the neutral safety wiring. If the trans is from an s5, then the xmember will bolt up, but if not, then prepare to fab up some trans mounts. Haynes manual pg130 shows where the n safety switch is,188 tells you for s4 or s5 the pin configuration. As for tools, i highly suggest you get a 2ft extention for your rachet, and maybe some swivel sockets. and i hope you already have the flywheel nut socket. good luck. If you need any advice, feel free to pm me.

Yes, same drive shafts.
If you're going aftermarket you don't have to remove the flywheel nut, just the 6 little bolts.
S5 trans. makes the swap easier [you can just get 2 pieces of angle iron to extend the holes for the crossmember mount]
look in the haynes/factory manual and you'll find a picture of the S4 auto trans. connector.

You don't need a 2' extension but wobblies will help you greatly on the engine-trans bolts
take a block of wood and jack up the front of the engine when you're installing the manual transmission - It is near-as-makes-no-difference impossible otherwise.
Grab pedal rail bolt and manual brake/clutch pedals, swap that set into your car [after you've bolted the clutch master cylinder in place - this gives you extra room to bolt the cyl. in]
