Question need some help. im new

I have a 87 tII and it has some problems. i have bin looking at the forums for some time now, doing searches and stuff. but i still have some questions. to start of it gust bought this car like a week ago and i have always wanted to have an rx-7. i have found out now that they are picky cars.
My first prob is that when I'm accelerating the rpms get around 2500 to 3000 the car vibrates(this happens in any gear). but above or below that point it is fine.
The second problem is that the car when it is idling there is a popping noise in the exhaust. sounds like popcorn popping i have heard that this is detonation but i don't know that it would be coming from the exhaust if it was detonation? and the engine is shaking i think it might be that it is skipping and that it needs to be timed. i gust need so professional advise.
And one other question are you supposed to be smelling gas when you get out of the car it isn't like i have a huge leek it is like a hint of fuel but it is still there. i have heard of fc's catching on fire because of this problem with gas leaking in the engine.
I haven't don a tune-up yet but am in the proses of doing so. i'm going to do the ATF trick and see how that dose. i haven't don a compression test yet.
o ya and i know that the tps is supposed to read and move smoothly from 1ohm to 5ohm +or-1 but mine only goes from 1 to 3 dose that mean that i need to replace the tps. thanks in advance Aaron sorry i gust though that this was hilarious moly.... moly.... moly... moly..

Are you noticing this 3kRPM thing during the warm up cycle?

The poping may be the car just back firing.

As for the gas smell, Yes get used to it after a while you wont notice it. These cars run rich from the factory.

First, your bump has been deleted. Bumps are forbidden here in the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section.

#2 if the vibration is not gear dependant, then the Vibration isw probably from a mis-firing situation or a warped flywheel. Do you also occasionally have starting problems??? (starter doesn't crank fast enough or too fast)

#3 You can't have detonation at idle. If you are popping at idle, chances are again you have a mis-firing situation. Check the condition of spark plugs, spark plug cables and timing.

#4 you should never smell gas. Even the least bit suggests that there is a leak that needs to be fixed ASAP. A pulsation Dampener leak (the most common leak on a fuel injected RX-7) can easily lead to a major engine fire that distroys the car.

That is bad.

The only reason you should ever smell gas is if emission parts were removed (like the charcoal canister) or there is a fuel leak.

You should never smell gas. Smelling gas, means there is a fuel leak of some sort, which means there is the potential of a fire.

Fuel smell underhood = leak
Fuel leak = fire on outside of engine
Fire outside engine = bad

I don't know how many more times someone can post that.

And lets face it, if you are smelling fuel in the exhaust, your probably are running rich and not the most efficent so again, that would be bad.

i do run rich, but its never been a problem. yeah there are no emissions on the car, just straight pipe from headers to tailpipe.
